“Amateur Hour(s)”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2009

We've been staying in Elk for a few days; our innkeeper raved about the LH. True, it's a stunning location. But when our waiter came over, I wondered as he stumbled over simple words and couldn't answer basic questions on preparation, has the owner or chef ever role-played with him as a diner? When I asked about (on the menu), the soup de Poisson, he gave a quizzical look while the maitre' d came over & described it. I ordered the special artichoke with (as he described) olive oil & garlic dipping sauce. When it came, I knew immediately that he sauce was suspect, and was certain there was fish. I called him over & he said he would "ask the chef." Shouldn't he know since I and other people are allergic to fish? Yes, he FOUND OUT it had anchovy. The rest of the experience was so disappointing -- a $34 rib steak that had no flavor or even marbling to command such a price; my husband's baked oysters were bland & disappointing and his shrimp entree also had no flavor. It seemed like the maitre d knew a lot of people there who were regulars, but I felt a personal acknowledgement that they had made a mistake or even a "thank you" and goodbye could have salvaged the evening.
My recommendation if someone tell you to go there: have a drink, enjoy the view, then dine down the road at the Little River Inn.

“Great Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2008

Fabulous dinner in an exquisite location. The evening started with a warm greeting and ended with a warm bread pudding--and both were world class. The meal in between was simply wonderful and very satisfying. The service also was beyond expectations with the attention to detail that continued the evening. A very hearty recommendation.

“3rd best in area”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2008

Great location... at the bar or in the main dining room. The bar could use an upgrade to what is "top shelf"... but a very friendly place w/ a great view.

The main dining area has great views. The service is a bit odd ... almost a bit spooky... sorry but we both felt that way. We ordered oysters... and they were large like mussels... did not taste fresh... and had an odd frozen (tasteless) horseradish sorbet. The baked versions had large bread crumbs which don't work. There was some thought to make the oysters a bit different but it appears that quality and concept needs a re-visit.

The beet-cheese salad was great... just right... just the right amount. We ordered Rib Eye and a special filet mignon. The sauce for the filet was very nice... but unfortunately was overpowered by pepper which was completely unncessary. We could not eat the filet as a result. The rib eye was heavily peppered and a bit more edible. Lose the peppers and focus on your sauces. I like blackened and peppered meets... this was too much.

Dessert... uninspired.

Great location... great potential. The chef obviously has potential. The menu needs a refresh and some attention to detail... It fell a distant 3rd compared to the Albion River Inn and La Petite Rive... but better than Cafe Beaujolais.

I wish this and other local fine restaurants would do more with the local catch.

“Great Place For A Wonderful Dinner”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2007

Once again we are back from romantic weekend in the Mendocino area and the Ledford House was part of the great experience. We have dined here over the years and have always had exceptional service and food. This time we both had the three course special which included a wonderful warm fig salad, roasted chicken with rosemary and berry tart. Yum, Yum , Yum.

We will be back again on one of our visits up the coast.
