“Albion River Inn”

This is a lovely place to spend the New Years. The on site restaurant is cozy with excellent food and a great wine list. The service is top notch.

Room Tip: We have always stayed in Room 7. It's big, comfortable and has a nice outside deck to view the...

I find myself with a bit of a dilemma on how to write this review... I will start off by saying there was nothing particularly wrong with the room, but my husband and I are experienced travelers to the Fort Bragg/Mendocino coast area and for the price (OVER $260 per night) we just expected better. This was our 1st stay at the Albion River Inn and we stayed for 2 nights in room #7. When visiting the area, we typically stay at Ocean View Lodge in Ft. Bragg where we have never been disappointed, however, the best rooms are upstairs with no elevator available and a knee condition just won't allow for me to be using stairs. We sought out the best ocean-view alternative we could find that would have no or minimal stairs and found the Albion River Inn. The room was very clean and had some nice touches, 2 robes & a small bottle of wine, small fridge & coffee maker, and although they do not have a TV in the room, this is made clear on the website & with the ocean at our back door, we didn't really need it. However, the whole point of finding such a place to stay was so we could open up the sliding-glass door & be able to see & hear the ocean waves from the bed or most places in the room, unfortunately this is not really the case. Yes, it does have a spectacular view as long as you are standing on your deck or next to the window, but you can't really see it well from the bed or anywhere else in the room. Being on the cove, you can also only hear the waves crashing if you are outside or directly next to the window, there was also a lot more traffic noise than I would expect for the area & you can't hear the waves when traffic is going by. We even called in advance to ask specifically if you could hear the waves from inside the room (with the door open), and the representative said absolutely, we discovered this information was not the most accurate. The bed (queen size) was comfy enough & they provided a couple nice down pillows, we also had a wood-burning fireplace which is nice when it stays lit, (they provide the wood & matches). Most of the rooms are like duplex type cottages, the interior was attractive & decent sized, although I wouldn't consider it all that spacious as advertised and there is only a thin wood divider/partial fence that separated our deck area from the deck of the guests next door. When the neighbors were on the deck or had their door open, we could fully hear their conversations as well as them being able to hear us, which if you have a very goofy husband anything like mine, taking full advantage, could make for some very awkward moments! :) Also, if the neighbors are smoking outside on their deck, you will get the scent of their smoke. Their website has accurate photo's of each individual room and the view from the deck which is very nice & helpful.

The breakfast is served in the restaurant until 10am (included in your room fee although gratuity is expected & they bring you a tip book at the end of your meal), made to order from a somewhat limited menu with specials offered daily, it was definitely better than the typical hotel continental breakfast but really wasn't all that fabulous & the complementary muffins were not good at all. But the ocean view throughout most of the restaurant is gorgeous! The downside of breakfast for us, was that they ask you to make a breakfast reservation time that will remain the same for the duration of your stay, although it can be changed, we just don't like being on a schedule when we are on vacation, particularly in the mornings. It would've been really nice if they could've offered a room service option.
We planned on having dinner there however after seeing their dinner menu with the limited choices & high prices, with nothing that really appealed to us, we canceled our dinner reservations.

All that being said, it is unlikely we will return. Again the room and the service was nice but at this price, next time I think I will just suck it up & deal with the stairs & knee pain in exchange for the best views & sounds this side of heaven! :)

Room Tip: See Inn website for individual photos of each room & view

The views incredible! The rooms lovely! A place to return to more often! Everyone loves Mendocino and the coast--so why not stay on the coast! You do here at Albion River Inn. The views are just like those found on the web. No photo touch done there. We loved our room, the peace and also the majesty of the sea. A view from the bed or from the deck. The complimentary breakfast was in the restaurant attached to the property. The menu was small but each selection special--not just the way it was described but also the way it tasted---superb! You should definitely plan to have dinner there as well in the evening. If you have been to Mendocino and never stayed her you are really missing a special place!

Room Tip: All rooms are just as found online. No photo editing here!

We have celebrated our wedding anniversaries in the Menocino coast area since 1978. We have stayed at pretty much all of the better accommodations, including the now closed Heritage House back when it was managed by the owner-operator Dennens couple. We have found Albion River Inn and Little River Inn to be equally the best, all aspects considered, in the area.

The Internet connection works better than an LA Marriott we stayed in last week! Our cell phone (the provider with the best coverage..."Can you hear me now?") worked just fine. The other cell phone we have (lower-end economy provider) did not work at all.

The dinner and complimentary breakfast prepared by an outstanding chef was was definitely "high end". Complimentary wine in the room, daily newspaper (SF Chronicle), outstanding housekeeping, consierge and overall staff, makes this a number one choice for an experienced and discriminating annual visitor.

Room Tip: All the rooms have exceptional ocean view locations.

I brought my elderly parents to the Albion from the Midwest and have to say it was the highlight of their stay in California. The setting is beautiful and beyond compare. The food delicious and the staff some of the most professional and courteous people I (and my parents - who are still smiling) have ever had the good fortune of meeting.
I highly recommend the Albion to anyone considering a trip to the coast. Thanks to everyone we dealt with at the Albion!!!!

Room Tip: Any room is wonderful!!

We had a week long stay in California, mostly on the coast. One night we were to stay in Elk at a B&B we had a groupon for. When we arrived there the place was a nightmare so we chose to leave and had to find somewhere else to stay. It was a Wednesday and we had travelled from Mendocino to Elk and saw a pretty inn on the way down. It was the Albion River Inn. We called & my husband spoke to Doug. He was so nice and offered us a discount. When we got there we were so excited when we opened our door. We were right on the bluff overlooking the ocean. The room was really nice, with a fireplace and a really great porch with a sliding glass door & screen. We slept with the door open with the sound of the ocean crashing & a fire burning in the fireplace. What a awesome experience for our last night on the coast. Try the restaurant, it is top notch too.

Room Tip: I think all rooms are great.

We enjoyed our recent stay at the Albion River Inn. This was our first trip to Mendocino and it was beautiful. I guess with the present state of the economy we were not too surprised at the number of shops and large inns/hotels that had closed. The Albion River Inn has a great dining room/bar and they serve a huge breakfast to their hotel guests evey morning (included in the room fee). The grounds are beautiful, but the rooms could use a little updating. We enjoyed the fireplace in our room and would definitly stay here again.
