“Not many choices in Alameda south shore”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2014

The staff is helpful and pleasant. Clerk offered no-cost upgrade to suite (one bedroom with sitting room) for free. The location is good for us to be close to family. Having to drive in the Bay Area is a hassle with traffic galore. But Coral Reef is badly in need of updating. noisy Toilet ran constantly; had to close doors to keep it from bothering us at nite. Even though had kitchenette, nothing provided, not even wash cloth or soap. overhead fan in br very noisy, (like horses hooves on stone) turn it on to cool down and then turn off. Cleaning staff inconsistent at best. One day, bathroom supplies replenished but bed not made; several days towels were taken and not replaced, don't think the floor was vacuumed during our stay (at least some areas remained dirty, found paper under couch, etc.) Had two TV's, one in bedroom didn't work. Both were old picture-tube type, not flat screen and obviously not HD. No DVD player.

If you are not familiar with the Bay Area, Alameda is an island just off Oakland, across the bay from SF. The hotel is a block from the bay and you are close to wonderful walks, bird sanctuary. The Bay Area can have huge ranges of kind of weather and temperatures. Summer here can include foggy, overcast 50-60 degree weather or nice sunny days. you need to prepare for both. A short walk you can see SF across the bay. Beautiful view. There is a WONDERFUL ferry service from Alameda to SF Fishermans' Wharf. IT IS ONLY WAY TO TRAVEL THERE; AVOID DRIVING AT ALL COSTS.

for us, the location would bring us back, only to avoid driving from nearby areas. My sister found a suite in a private home and IT WAS WONDERFUL. Check out those possibilities.

In summary, the location overall was quiet, did have free off-street parking. Continental breakfast provided (donuts, cereal, juice, coffee). Internet was fairly good at this particular room. Wish they would update the place and give better attention to servicing room.

Room Tip: ask for room further from South Shore shopping center side, it is quieter away from that road.

The place is clean but desperately in need of all new furnishings. It appears to be the original furnishings from 60 plus years ago. The porcelain on the tub is literally worn thru to the cast iron. Inferior bedding left me feeling like I was run over by a truck! I think that if the accommodations are reminiscent of a hotel from 1963... they. Should charge 8 bucks a night and then i5 might be considered a value. Otherwise avoid this total dump until they are forced to spend their profits on a much needed total redo!!!

We have stayed on this property about 20 times as our daughter lives on Alameda. We have always been comfortable here and consider it an outstanding value. The staff is VERY friendly and aim to be helpful. The morning breakfast is adequate and enjoyable. A USA Today paper is available. The rooms are clean and spacious but the decor is early 70's and needs an upgrade to be more than satisfactory. We have occasionally had some feature not operating properly but it has always been fixed when pointed out (TV remote, lightbulb, etc.). If you are looking for a reasonable place to sleep without a lot of frills this is the spot. We think is is very good for a 2 star accommodation.

Room Tip: try to get a room off the street for less noise. interior rooms have a nice courtyard view

I chose to stay here due to an early flight out of Oakland and got a great rate through a travel site.

The good:
The staff was very friendly
Easy check in/check out
Free breakfast
Free, fast, reliable wifi
Right across the street from shopping center with grocery store, Trader Joes, Panera, etc.

The not so good:
Property is very dated (dirty/worn carpets in hallways, paint touch ups needed, old tiles in shower, etc)
Room with balcony on Park Street was noisy - woke up several times from traffic

OK spot to stay if you need something close to airport, but not a place where you want to hang out in your room.

Room was clean, but stairway was dirty. small tv and remote didn't work. Room was very large with a small kitchen and a balcony that overlooked a very nice pool. Room and bathroom need updating. We checked in at 9 pm and had to park quite a distance from our room.

And staff was accommodating. Only a short cab ride from the airport. Just what we needed after a hectic day and a night flight to California. Sitting outside by the pool, watching the ducks and drinking tea restored me.

Basic basic basic almost uninhabitable. Noisy neighbors across the street at the bowling alley. This room was worth at most 40$ and the breakfast was good for diabetes. On our checkout day there was no employees to be found in the lobby and breakfast wasn't being served which was odd but to be expected of this dingy motel. Do your self a favor and pay a little more to stay somewhere nice so you can enjoy your trip and not have to worry who might be stealing your stuff. forget about this roach motel. When we tried to talk to the manager he just closed the door to his office and left us standing there in the lobby. Worst hotel stay ever. Dirty hallways. Stains on the carpet. Keys constantly not working. Rude staff.
