“Dog-friendly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2012

Visited the park in late July. Very dog-friendly- dogs are welcome on some of the trails, and there is a dedicated section of the beach open to dogs. When the attendant saw we had a dog with us, she gave us a dog treat.
The beach was clean, and there was plenty of room- we weren't crowded at all.

“Loved It!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2012

What a great beach! There was a constent breeze, and the water was very refreshing. You can bring food and drinks. Great place, I missed it the first time I went to door county. I'll be back every year.

“Nice hike through the dunes”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2012

We walked the Red Trail in mid-May. It took us along the lake with its sandy beach, up Old Baldy (which isn't "bald", but has nice views), and through different forest and clearings. A nice variety of scenery and an easy hike. There are apparently fossils in the rocks behind the picnic area, but we didn't find them.

Walking here is a nice contrast to the cliffs and rocky shoreline found along the bay side of the Door County Peninsula.

“A great walk in the woods”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2011

There is a small visitor lodge near the parking area that is worth a visit if you have kids or are extremely interested in the dunes. There are also some recreations along some of the trail near the visitor center. The main attraction for us was just a nice walk in the woods - which was accomplished. It was November so the trails were pretty empty (and the beach untested).

Be aware, these dunes are amazing in the fact that they exist (since they are not downwind of prevailing winds) and not in their absolute magnitude. The neighboring Cave Point is worth a stop also.

“Depends on when you visit the Park.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2011

Read some of the other reviews and I don't think we visited the same place. We just got back from a Sunday hike. It was our private park. The wind was blowing across Lake Michigan so the surf was up. It was like a Frederick Varley (Group of Seven Canada) painting from the Visitors Center. If you visit for the Dunes, I'm not sure you'll be impressed. In terms of their height. What you should be impressed with is the preservation of a 3,000 year old landmark that has been used by human beings, eight different periods, because of the abundance of fish, wildlife and a place to summer. Hey, isn't that the reason we come here in July? But let's face it. If you have a dog, you have a totally different perspective. We have been bringing our dogs here for about ten years. You hike down the Red Path to the 3rd beach, which is frankly the best beach in the park. And it's here that you are amazed at how dogs love to swim, frolic and just have a great time. If you don't have a dog or don't like dogs, don't waste any more time. Go to Michigan.
