I travel all over the US and Canada and like to have a home away from home when staying at a hotel. The Kimpton line of hotels in the US rarely fail to provide that experience. And even within the chain, there are definitely my favorites. When in DC, my two favorites are the Donovan and Palomar in that order. What edges the Donovan House over the Palomar is the more personal staff! Nine Zero (another Kimpton) in Boston and the Donovan House are my favorites throughout the US due to the staff and really do make me feel like part of the hotel family, sharing personal tidbits about their lives and giving me their individual personalities throughout my stays (which they are allowed to do, thank goodness, in the Kimpton chain - also a testament to the fantastic management by Harald and Janina at the Donovan and Andrew at Nine Zero!).
Even though I am in their premium Inner Circle group with Kimpton, I have witnessed both properties interact with all the customers at all levels. They are just amazing, specifically Meagan, Andy and Thomas (front desk/concierge) at Nine-Zero (Boston) and Kevin, Mark, Rosa, Felicia and Daisy (front desk) and Kiru and Malaku (door/bellmen) at the Donovan House! But they are all great at the properties! This is why I keep coming back.
Nine-Zero - just went through renovations of their suites, but their regular rooms are also spectacular, overlooking Boston Common and very sleek with personality!
Donovan House - love the foyer with a spy movie projected on the upper wall, spy names given to the staff and a 50s/60s retro vibe with the swivel chairs that are relaxing and addicting to sit in. Your room will most likely have a funky, snail shell like shower that is really cool!
Both locations, like most Kimptons, keep their rooms pristine and always inviting!
Nine-Zero - overlooking Boston Common, steps from great restaurants and the red/green line T (subway)
Donovan House - on 14th street, quickly becoming the street for great restaurants of all styles, across from a pharmacy and crepe restaurant (one of my favorite foods) and 10 minutes walking from Dupont Circle, a safe and exciting hub of DC. The Capitol and museums are very close, as is the Metro (subway) that takes you directly to National airport!
All in all, Kimpton is the way to go and these two hotels exemplify the Kimpton life and the the life that all travelers should experience when away from their home. The Disney properties say "Welcome Home" but the Kimpton properties mean it!!!!
