The day of check in, a sink hole opened up on the street where we were supposed to have our room. I was sick and not in the mood for the all night jackhammering. The wonderful clerk found us an upgraded room that overlooked the trees and the guard gate for the White House! It was super quiet at night (I'm a light sleeper). Couldn't hear anything from the rooms next door, but in the morning the whistles of the traffic cops are very audible, as were the street people partying in the park below the windows. It wasn't loud enough to interrupt sleep, though.
(Got the booking on priceline for $215 and $265).
Being sick, I was so happy that the hotel had three wonderful restaurants right out in front. Even during the heat wave of 95 degree heat, we were very comfortable under the umbrellas having lunch. We ate at two of them several times each, The Occidental and the Cafe' Du Parc. They are a bit pricey, but both were pretty good. I liked the Occidental much better because they had many more umbrellas for good coverage from the sun, some wonderful padded lounging couches they call the "lounge" and great music that was a mix of Sinatra-like songs and nice "feel good" music that made me feel like the luckiest person in the world for being able to enjoy such a wonderful experience. At night, it is heavenly to just walk down from the room and have a dessert in that Lounge area.
Just out of the back door and to the right is the best bakery cafe' chain ever- the Corner Bakery. Breakfast is really, really good and much cheaper than the hotel. The lunches are great, too. Between the Corner Bakery and the restaurants in front of the hotel, we didn't eat anywhere else except the Ebbett grill once.
There are two Bike Share stations within 2 blocks, which made biking everywhere very nice. We did the night bike tour, which we wouldn't have done if we'd been staying outside the mall area.
I highly recommend this hotel. Last year we stayed at a very nice hotel a short metro ride away which was half the price. It was hard to make it to the room for a midday nap when tired from a day's sightseeing. This year, I opted to pay more for the room stay only 4 days, and to be in the center of everything (and to see what it's like living like a Kennedy.) It was awesome, and it is our new vacation strategy.
When booking a low end room, the courtyard rooms will be quieter as they don't overlook the busy...
