“Weekend of the Willard”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2012

You can't go wrong by staying at the Willard when in Washington, DC. Everything is within walking distance - great restaurants, the Metro, the Smithsonian, and many great shops.
Remember to look up when in the lobby for the seals of the states. The receptionist was very informative about the history of "lobbists".
If you enjoy a long, warm, soaking bath, the Willard has the best old tubs! Before you leave, take a peek into the Willard Room and recall the movies that featured this beautiful hotel.

This is a beautiful historic old hotel that lives up to its name. We were traveling with our daughter so we upgrated to a suite, definitely worth the money considering this was DC. We had 2 large rooms with 2 separate bathrooms and breakfast included. All of the staff were very friendly, their historic bar was a little small but their breakfast buffet was excellent. Great location to be in the middle of everything to see DC.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher room facing west to see the Washington monument out your window.

Stayed with my husband for business. It was lovely but no matter how you slice it, it is old. Just depends on whether charm or new is what you want. Easy central location but local cafes on the ground floor are not good. Really not good.

Perfect location, incredibly beautiful lobby, everything you could ask for; but the best part is this past weekend our room was late getting ready - and they gave us an incredible room - the Theodore Roosevelt Suite. What a thrill for us and our grandson who we were treating to a night in a DC hotel. We like to try different hotels, restaurants, etc. but from now on we will not bother with any of the others.

The Willard is tops for location in the crowded DC hotel scene and the staff if not busy- do go out of their way to be helpful. Its still has the the old world charm in its public spaces including the lobby and little coffee shop on the kern. However rooms are not consistent- given age of the hotel is, be sure to get a renovated room which has been redone. Be wary on what room you get and it being DC- depending on the day the price/night can fluctuate wildly.

I recently stayed at the Willard for a meeting. I hadn't been there for about a year and a half, but it could have been a month ago - this hotel is amazingly consistent in its quality of service and facilities. The staff is unfailingly gracious and welcoming. The sleeping rooms are very nice, although this time I was in one of the 11th floor rooms that only has a small round window. it gives the room a lot of character, but does mean it's pretty dark. The meeting rooms are a bit spread out but are well maintained and staffed. One of the best features of the Willard is its location on Pennsylvania Avenue. It is right in the middle of Washington's many museums and monuments and also within easy walking distance or a short taxi ride to many, many dining options, from delicious neighborhood cafes to 5-star restaurants. The Willard is by no means inexpensive, but if you're willing to pay for it, it's a great place to stay.

Room Tip: As I mentioned, the 11th floor rooms (at least some of them) only have a small round window that is...

I came to DC for business and decided to stay at the Willard for one night on my own dime before moving on to the ‘work hotel’ that was booked for me.

The first thing you notice, and continue to notice at this landmark hotel, is how well trained the staff are. Everyone, from the women behind the reception to the bartenders at Round Robin to the fantastic concierge and the housekeeping staff, were unfailingly pleasant and helpful. The accumulation of these kindnesses certainly do add up, and they make a difference in the quality of a guest’s stay.

The location is great for touring around, and the lobby itself is pretty impressive in an old-school kind of way. Not really my own taste, but it was fun to see the sort of old-fashioned sumptuousness of the place.

Booked my room directly on the Intercontinental website and chose a king room at $329. The woman at the reception granted my request for a quiet room (thank you very much, it was) but, alas, that meant I was looking directly across the street at a wall of windows of the JW Marriott hotel. Eh. Sort of a let-down on entering the room for the first time, as there was very little light coming in the windows. But the morning sunshine the next day was nice.

In the end, the room was just so-so for that price. Nothing special, really. The super comfortable bed and the white, marbelled bathroom were the highlights. I also appreciated the little coffee maker and Washington Post delivery in the morning. The sort of faded green-yellow-burgundy color scheme of the furnishings were kind of dull for my liking, and while the overall feel of the room was in keeping with a hotel of this period/style, the room still felt kind of old-fashioned and out of date. Everything in perfect repair, mind you, but still a bit on the dull side. Not a lot of outlets for electronics and had I had to charge my phone in the bathroom. Not a huge deal, but still, I was looking around under desks and night tables in a bit of disbelief.

My goal was just to see what the Willard was all about. I left the hotel glad to have had the experience of staying there and felt lifted by the kindness of the entire staff. My experience at check-out was the best, actually... The entire process took about 1.5 minutes, and the lovely woman behind the reception came around from the desk, asked if she could carry my bags, opened open the front doors, hailed a cab, held the car door, and greeted me goodbye by name. Remarkable, really.

Would I stay there again at that rate? Probably not, only because I'd stay in Dupont and because my curiosity has been satisfied. But I imagine there are much nicer rooms than the one I stayed in and that you could have a really lovely experience in a room at a higher price point.
