“I was suprised”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2013

I came to DC last summer for a month, for a business trip. Of course everything was paid for and booked for, all I needed to do was show up.

Im usually a very fussy hotel guest, that won't stay unless its a 5* hotel and top noch.

When I was told that my stay will be at the State Plaza, I looked it up and prepared my self for the worst, When I got there I got the surprise of my life. The hotel was spotless, staff were amazing, room quite big as well.

I couldnt fault it one bit.

Thank you very much for your hospitality!!

This hotel has nice, clean rooms with a small dressing room outside the bathroom and a small kitchen. Our room was quiet and clean, and the staff at the front desk was helpful and friendly. My only reservation about the hotel is the attached restaurant, where the breakfast buffet leaves much to be desired. Often the scrambled eggs were hard, the bacon was twisted up with sausage, and little else was offered. The coffee was sometimes muddy.

This hotel is an older hotel in D.C. it is in a great location. I was not very happy with the temperature in the room at all and when I called the desk I was told "there were other guests in the hotel who were complaining it was too cold" I am guessing that their A/C system was not adjustable. I was advised by the staff to open windows with no screens on them. Staff didnt seem overly concerned with it either. Parking was expensive with the hotel as well.

Booked through Orbitz at State Plaza Hotel, corner of 21st and E and Virginia.
Location: across from the West End of the Mall, short walk to Lincoln Memorial. Close to Foggy Bottom Metro station, just south of GW campus. Nice location.

Room: was very big. Had a very large room, eat in kitchen, and fairly large bathroom. Would probably pay triple price in NYC for lot worse room, so State Plaza was great deal for great room. Overall, the room and the hotel could use some freshening up by sanding down all the paint they had (eventually, each groove on the molding gets filled with paint). But no complaints. Lots of hot water, lots of water pressure, coffee machine worked, etc. Was very quiet as it wasn't in core downtown.

Internet: wireless was free, but it was a little slow.

Had 2 queen beds, which was nicer than having 2 double beds that you'd expect to find.

Food: Dunkin Donuts is a block away, though NOTE: it is closed on weekends. Starbucks is one block further down on E and open on weekends. CVS is right beside hotel as is a liquor store. Other than that, we ate elsewhere in DC.

Would I go back: Yes.

Dear Shazzman,

Thank you for taking the time to review the State Plaza Hotel. Having rooms large enough to fit two queen size beds is truly an asset that our Guest very much enjoy. We're glad that you felt our hotel is a great value as well. We apologize for the slow internet and we are working on improving the bandwidth so that we won't have these issues anymore. We will resolve this as soon as possible. Our greetings to you up north and we hope that we will see each other again.

Our room was spacious and clean. The services provided were minimal, but the staff was helpful. My only complaint was that there weren't many restaurants or shops nearby, it was extremely close to the State Department. I would stay here again.

Thank you for a very pleasant stay at the State Plaza Hotel. It was everything we expected, great location, (close to the metro, George Washington university, grocery stores, coffee shop, etc), and clean (great maid service!), charming (we love the history of buildings as well as the architecture) and we also made plenty of use of the quaint dressing room, charming kitchenette, and useful desk area. We recommend this hotel. Let’s not forget to mention the polite and accommodating employees who helped us locate a forgotten computer at the airport as well as the friendly bell clerks in particular Mr. Bekele Teferra.
Sincerely,
Helen and Jeff Moore

Room Tip: The only negative was the slow elevator. So if you are in a hurry, choose a room on the ground floor...

Booked a 1 bedroom suite as an upgrade which was excellent, we were a few in the party so having an actual living room with a dining table and kitchen were very useful. We lucked out with a newly renovated suite in north tower. We prepaid and experienced flight delays, although I called ahead to hold the room upon arrival we were told it wasn't ready and were given a king room. When I returned to the front desk to explain I pre-paid a suite, Juan at the front desk quickly took care of it. This gentleman is a definite asset and deserves employee of the year. Will definitely recommend this hotel for the convenience to the sites, GW campus, waterfront, variety of restaurants in the neighbourhood, etc.
