“Decent hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2008

My boyfriend and I stayed here at the end of June for a weekend and we found the hotel to be OK. We booked through Priceline and I think it was about 100 dollars per night. We found a parking spot on the street in front of the hotel so we did not pay the 32 dollars a day valet parking. The parking on the street is free in DC from Friday after 6 PM until Monday morning. The hotel is a few blocks from the Metro which came in handy. All in all a good experience.

I was with a group that stayed at the Renaissance M Street Hotel at the end of June. The hotel was completely booked. I was in a king room on the 9th floor. Friends were in a double room on the 7th floor. My room on the 9th floor was perfect. Large entry hall, super comfy king bed, desk, LCD TV. Our "view" was an interior view overlooking other rooms of the hotel. That was the only downside. The A/C was super cold and quiet. Both rooms were beautifully decorated in a contemporary fashion. My traveling companions didn't have the same perfect experience, though. Their room was smaller, the A/C was very noisy and leaked water onto the carpet for about three feet away from the a/c unit. It was a "handicap" room, so there was no tub, only a shower. When anyone took a shower, the water went all over the entire bathroom floor and their was nothing you could do about it.

Now I know why this hotel receives so many mixed reviews. If you're in a nice, normal sized room like I was, it was a great experience. In fact, the LA Galaxy soccer team was playing the D.C. United team while we were there and the team stayed on the 9th floor of the hotel. (Can you say David Beckham!?!) I'm sure their rooms were equal or better than mine. So, your experience at this hotel just depends on the room you are assigned. Their are some "tiny" rooms, some rooms that need work, and also some great rooms.

The lobby was beautifully decorated. The hotel personnel were fantastic! They worked so hard to please everyone at the hotel, and it was a very crowded weekend.

You have about a four block walk to either the Dupont Circle or Foggy Bottom Metro stations. Many restaurants in the surrounding area, everything from fast food to four star dining. You're only about a mile from Georgetown and great shopping. You're surrounded by various embassies and other very nice hotels. Overall, I was very pleased with the location and the hotel. If I didn't know the experience of other traveling companions, I would have given this a five star review.

Stayed on a Saturday night and got a good rate that included complimentary valet parking.

Staff very friendly and responsive.

Room was on the smallish side but very comfortable and clean. Bed was VERY comfortable.

Close (three blocks) to the DC Metro station at GWU.

This hotel has nothing to recommend it. The location is lousy, the rooms are small and the bathrooms are smaller than small. We were given a room that was the smallest room that we have ever had in a hotel. The bathroom had a single sink and no counter space. And, the room had not been cleaned very well. We found a dirty sock and a calculator under the bed!

We asked to have our room changed, which the hotel said it could not do until the second day of our stay, notwithstanding the fact that both my husband and I are Marriott platinum preferred. When our room was changed, we were upgraded to a suite. That was nice, but the suite had the same tiny bathroom. And, the lighting was totally inadequate. In addition, the suite had a musty smell.

Lastly, there is $10 per day charge for hardline internet access. In this day and age, in a convention/business hotel, that is ridiculous. Build the charge into the room rate and tell the guests that internet access is free.

I would recommend the Courtyard near the spy museum or the JW near the White House if you want to stay at a Marriott in DC. But, don't settle for this hotel.

We didn't reserve far enough in advance to use our rewards points, so we booked 2 nights through Priceline at $66 per night.

The hotel was difficult to find by car. Parking per night was expensive ($32 per night).

The front desk upgraded us to a room with 2 double beds on the Concierge floor, which entitles a guest to breakfast in the Concierge Lounge. This made up for the extremely small room size and excessive noise. We've stayed in many Marriotts throughout the years, and have never had a room this small.

We used our white noise machine, but we still heard other guests and outside traffic noise. There were very loud conventions both nights. You might want to check if there are conventions booked before you decide to stay at this hotel, especially if you're travelling with small children.

The hotel restaurant was excellent, both the food and staff.

For the Priceline rate, it was a solid value. For rack rate, I'd stay somewhere else.

Convenient to Dupont Circle Metro or Faragat North or West
Stations. Hotel is new so room was beautiful - all new inside.
Very quiet property except for a few late night Party animals
(graduation weekend) that made a bit of noise in the hall.
Also nice to have access to nearby Marriott's pool etc although we didn't utilize those facilities. You don't need a car if staying here as you can walk everywhere. 24 hour stores nearby and several good restuarants (Front Page, Hudsons etc). You can't have everything in the big city - so the room size was an acceptable compromise considering the price under $200 per night.
Marriott never disappoints - beautifully appointed rooms and baths.

This hotel has a beautiful lobby and impeccable service from staff, but the rooms are impossibly small! There's a desk on a swing arm that you have to move to get into the closet. No place to sit and watch television except on the bed. It's impossible to apply makeup with kneeling on the toilet to get close to the mirror. Plus, my room had holes in the carpet and the wallpaper in the bathroom. The beds are super comfy, though. For $300+ a night, there are other hotels in DC where I've had better accommodations.
