“The Metro station under the hotel was great”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2010

I'm really happy I picked this hotel simply for its location. We planned to spend the majority of our time at the different Smithsonian museums and if you walk outside the main door of the hotel, make a right, and walk about 2 blocks you arrive at the Smithsonian castle. Although the hotel is in an area that doesn't have much to offer at night, having a metro stop right under the hotel was just perfect, we used it to get everywhere. Myself and my girlfriend felt safe at night having an elevator that came right up into the hotel.

The room was very clean, although it could use updating. The wall paper in our room was peeling, the furniture was badly scratched, the phones were at least 20 years old, and the art on the walls was beginning to wrinkle and turn yellow. If you want any sort of air circulating in the room you can hear it run constantly. None of that stuff about the room bothered me or my girlfriend. We wanted a hotel in a good location, safe, and clean; the L'Enfant Plaza Hotel fulfilled all of those wants. We didn't plan to spend much time in our room just to sleep and take an occasional break from sightseeing.

If you don't feel comfortable using the metro to get around the city I wouldn't book a room here. It's vital because if you don't choose to have dinner in the hotel there is really no other choices within reasonable walking distance. We used the metro to get everywhere including breakfast, lunch, and dinner (the hotel's dinning options were ridiculously over priced). Getting a taxi in that area is not a reasonable option. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who plans to visit the Smithsonian museums or explore the national mall.

Arrived back this morning - all I can say is great location, walking distance to everything. Worse things more than the Good - hotel needs a serious update once you get out of the lobby and into the floors above the office building (yes the hotel is a major office complex) the wall paper is peeling, the ceiling is cracking, you can hear everything that the room upstairs does in the bathroom even down to the running water (walls are paper thin). Hotel is on a main hub metro station good for somethings but very noisy at 5.45 am when the first train rumbles through and pass on the main line again this will be down to the hotel needing to be modernised with some proper noise reduction measures.
Avoid the restaurant - breakfast limited and expensive 3 rounds of toast 1 tea, coffee and orange juice $20.35. dinner not much change out of $60.00 also with regards to dinner don't bother if you want normal size meals and not supersize, and heaven forbid you want smaller portions you can't, you can also not order off the children’s menu, this if for only under 12 so over 12 years old forgot it you will be asked to leave. Hence ended up using room service due the restaurant refusing to serve use.
Reception staff, friendly on the first day but after that, they couldn't be bothered and even lied to us a couple of times. Refused to let us have a late check out even when we offered to pay extra. Which is not good customer service? By the end of the week we got the impression that they prefer business people who are here for conferences than the holiday maker who like us has paid a lot of money to go 4000 odd miles to be treated like 3rd class citizens.

We stayed at this hotel for a conference. For the price, the accommodations were average. The hotel could use renovating and sound proofing. It probably was really nice when it was first built. The gym closed early without any notification to guests about early closure. Customer service was average. If the conference weren't held at this hotel, we wouldn't have chosen to stay there. It's adequate for conferences and business, but we wouldn't recommend it for vacationers.

We stayed here for a week in the Easter holidays, just in time to see the Cherry Blossom Parade which was fantastic. Our room had 2 double beds, everything was clean and the TV worked fine. The hotel is right on top of one of the busiest metro stations so you can more or less travel anywhere from this station. It is also 2 blocks from the Smithsonian Castle so on some days we just walked everywhere. We were lucky to be by the ice dispenser, which lots of people seem to complain about, and there was also a drinks dispenser in the room with the ice machine. The staff were always polite.

We didn't use the restaurants in the hotel. We had breakfast most days in the cafes underneath the hotel in the plaza and eat out for lunch and dinner.

All in all we had a lovely time here and would recommend this hotel.

This hotel is a great place to stay if you can get a rate below $150 a night, which was easy at the time that I booked. The hotel is clean, functional and quiet. The rooms are large. The beds are first rate. While the decor may appear to be a bit dated, there is marble in the large bathrooms and the price is half the average hotel rate in this neighborhood. The hotel is located above a Metro subway stop making it easy to go anywhere in D.C. It is located just two blocks from the Capitol Mall, just behind the Smithsonian Castle. There are inexpensive places to grab breakfast in the mall below the hotel. Based on prior reports, it appears that the parlor rooms are bad because they do not have real beds, only fold outs. The staff was professional. There are great views of the river, the pool or the Washington Monument. Internet was free in business center and $10 per day or $5 per hour in the rooms, which is common in D.C. hotels.

The location is great, about 5 minutes walk south of the Smithsonian castle, but the hotel is not worth the prices.

The public areas and staff are great, but the rooms are tired and in need of renovation. When we checked in, we found a glass of liquid filled with cigarette butts on the balcony of our non-smoking room. There is a charge for wi-fi ($10 daily or $25 for 3 days). The toilet paper dispenser in the bathroom is very inconveniently located (children can't reach it while seated on the toilet). The TV is small and fuzzy. There is no mini fridge in the room. The desk chair was frayed. There is only one ice machine per floor, and it is a far walk if you're not located near it. The pool is cloudy and over clorinated, and is covered with a stained white tent/dome.

Hotel offers a great access to Metro line and is relatively close to the Mall. It is safe and the staff was friendly. Pool was covered in a tent and looked nothing like what was pictured on the website. No free internet and I felt for $260 a night there would free internet. The toilet and sink leaked. I was not impressed.
