Stayed here recently for a conference. We had stayed here once before but this time it was a decidedly different experience. First, we arrived at about 3:30 in the afternoon expecting a short or no wait for our room. Well much to our surprise, we were not able to check in til about 4:45. So much for a 4:00 check in time. Our room was on the 12th floor. A large room (the 2 double beds were dwarfed in all that space) with sliders which opened to the pool area courtyard, we thought, wow, this is a really great location. Unfortunately so did all the college students who were there that weekend and partied til 3 am right outside our door. With all the running, whooping and hollering up and down the 12th floor corridor (note: walls are paper thin so you hear everything) as well as outside by the pool, I called security at about 2 am but I guess they could not control this rowdy crowd. To the hotel's credit, they comped the night when I complained (and apparently I was not the only one) to the manager the next morning. Still, all that noise speaks volumes about the hotel's lax security force. Thankfully, the kids checked out that morning so the remaining nights of our stay were pleasant enough.
That said, the room was comfortable although why a room of this size would house 2 double beds is beyond me. Everything worked fine but the carpet, decor and bedding were "tired" and could really use an update. TV was an old CRT and at first I thought it was broken but after fiddling with the remote for a few minutes, I figured out the "secret" and got it working.
Front desk staff was just OK. At times I did not see anyone there and when helping guests, got the impression that some felt inconvenienced. Or maybe they were just overwhelmed. Anyway not the best experience here. Bell staff was, on the other hand, very accommodating as were the restaurant staff.
Speaking of restaurants, we ate at the American Grill several times and would highly recommend for both quality and value. Sunday night they offered a buffet for $15 which included a delicious variety of foods as well as beverage and dessert. Great deal! Other meals there were wonderful as well and the servers were pleasant and helpful. We also had a quick bite at the Foggy Brew Pub (great thin crust pizza) and it looked like a great gathering place.
I think everyone agrees that this hotel is in a prime location right at the L'Enfant Plaza metro stop and within walking distance to almost everything you will want to see along the mall in DC.
The shops and eateries at the metro/promenade level were convenient and varied. Be prepared for a long trek to the CVS (good place for water, snacks and incidentals) however.
Would we stay here again? Probably, if just for the convenience the location affords.
