“Trendy hotel for trendy people”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2006

Stayed here in Jan '06.

OK location - 10-15 minutes walk to anywhere with sights.

Nice and modern hotel, outrageous deisgn elements and colour combos. Relaxing bar with casual music. WiFi throughout the hotel (but fairly poor signal on high floors).

Small bathroom, but good shower.

  • Liked — Funky design
  • Disliked — Small bathroom, poor wireless internet on high floors
  • Tips/Secrets — Don't forget the free champagne and cheese reception every evening!

Welcoming staff even though we arrived much later than hoped having gone to wrong end of street in error--don't ask?---they were very friendly to us .Our room was great large and very comfy, loved the furry bedspread!!!!!
Despite very busy bar ,this did not interfer with us as room was on 8thfloor but the air conditioning units outside our window did make too much noise for my liking!!!! probably could have moved but had great view----can't have everything eh??
good loction to walk to White House etc.
Would recommend and return to ;have also stayed at Topaz same chain and equally as good.

This was definately one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in. We stayed in the room with the bunkbed room, and it was so perfect for our family. The hotel lobby is so hip and inviting. The staff was so friendly and helpful. The beds were comfy, linens soft and room was very clean. I would refer anyone to this hotel and I will for sure stay in it again when I am in the DC area. This is a must stay at hotel.

We stayed at the Hotel Helix Aug. 9 - 14, and we felt that it was the perfect choice for our family! We had a "bunk room". The main room had a small sofa, plus a chair, a desk, a TV and CD Player. There were two alcoves off of the living area: one with a King bed (enclosed by a sheer curtain) and one with bunk beds. The bunk bed was a double size on the bottom, and that room had its own TV/DVD player mounted on the ceiling. Our kids (boy and girl, ages 8 and 11) loved this arrangement! Every night they begged to go back to "their" room. The bathroom was small, but adequate. We had decent-quality in-room coffee, and nice Aveda toiletries. The refrigerator was mostly full of mini-bar stuff, but we put a few small items in overnight.

We walked everywhere, but we are very into hiking, etc. It is about a 30 minute trek to the mall (going at the speed of the youngest child). The metro is about five blocks away. We felt very safe in the neighborhood, even at night, but we live in CT and spend a lot of time in NYC, so we are not disturbed by the occasional homeless person, etc.

The room was very clean and comfortable for us, and I don't say this lightly, as I have traveled extensively both in the U.S. and overseas. Every single staff member I encountered was polite and helpful. The valet parking was $27 per day, but that was comparable to all of the other hotels I looked at in the area. We never heard noise from the bar in our room. There were some noisy fellow guests one night, but they quieted down before it got too late. I highly recommend this hotel and room arrangement as a terrific option for families who need three beds while staying in D.C..

Some Friends and I stayed at Hotel Helix during a weekend trip to D.C. We booked 2 king suites through Travelocity. First off, there is no self parking at this hotel. It's valet, or good luck finding a spot on the street. The front desk staff was rude with the exception of one lady.... It took us almost 30 minutes to get checked in because they couldn't find one of our reservations. Then we had to wait until they cleaned a room for us. (it was 4:30pm by then, check in is 3pm) But whatever, these things are forgiveable... but then we get to our rooms.... BOTH suites had nasty stains on the couch cushions (both sides!) that we could only politely be described as looking "adult". The door to our room didn't shut properly and was left open by the cleaning staff. (apparently this is a common problem at hotel helix) Our suites were on 2 different floors, one of which was apparently the "pet friendly" floor. It stank of dog all the way down the hall and in the room. The other floor stank of cigarette smoke. They also use bedding that I don't see how it could possibly be sanitized properly. We could hear music thumping from the bar until around 11 at night, this wasnt an issue for us but I did see people checking in with their families and children. Definately not a family place. It's a pretty good hike to walk anywhere of interest or to the metro from the hotel. On the plus side they do serve free champagne or wine at a certain time during the evening. Skip this one unless you're just planning on throwing a party there (which there were plenty of) Check out the L'Enfant Plaza Hotel for a good hotel in the Capitol area.

We had a blast in DC and the Hotel Helix was equally awesome! The staff was very friendly and accomodating. The hotel was certainly the neatest hotel I have ever stayed in. The room wasn't very large and the bathroom was tiny, but they were clean and we were only in the room for a small amount of time. The valet parking was a bit expensive, but you're in a major city...what do you expect? We were really tired one night, so we decided to drink and eat in the bar area...it was great! Also, we paid only $140 a night...which I thought was very reasonable. I would certainly reccomend this hotel.

What a surprise this is!! Everything is classy and stylish - in an outlandish way.
We checked in just as the bar was about to close for food but the staff could not have been more helpful.
The rooms are amazingly large with unusual decoration and style and have everything you could want - and more. The bathrooms are reasonable size and with good toiletries.
Breakfasts are good and so is the food in the bar. What a pity it is not open during the day!!
All of the staff are extremely friendly and helpfull although I found the concierge service a bit lacking. That and poor instructions for finding and using the computer room are my only (small) complaints.
If you want an experience - try the Helix- and if you get a chance, go the the Studio Theatre, just around the corner.
