“Hip, Unique, Fun”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2013

We stayed at Helix for 3 nights, and overall we were happy with our stay. The rooms have different themes, workout, spa etc. They have yoga mats, stationary bikes and more in your room. The retro decor was an eye catching treat; pop art covered the walls of our room. The bedding was wonderful, lush and inviting. The only real drawback was the bathroom. VERY tiny! This was an old property with a revamp, and they did a really good job; however, they redecorated instead of remodeling. You have a bathroom barely large enough for one person to turn around. The hotel is within walking distance of several metro stops and a brisk walk would get you there in about 5-7 min. As long as the weather is nice, this is a perfect option.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a bigger bathroom.

I was only at Helix for a short one-night stay but definitely plan on returning sometime soon. It had a very unique, fun and welcoming atmosphere. All of the employees were very helpful and friendly. The hotel room was very clean and spacious with a comfortable bed. The location was perfect and the front desk staff very accommodating if you have any questions about directions, places to go or need a cab called. I have stayed at several Kimpton hotels in D.C. and have enjoyed all of them but I especially enjoyed Helix's laid-back, fun atmosphere for a quick weekend getaway.

Decor- This hotel is just tired and the decor is out dated. It needs a face lift. While the rooms/bathrooms felt clean, further inspection revealed stains on the wall, torn curtains, lampshades with tears, scuffed edges and tired looking furnishings. The pictures in the hallway are very outdated and ridiculous. This place needs a makeover.
Service- the staff was nice and helpful. they upgraded us, which was nice.
Location- There were some great restaurants around, it is about .5 mile from the nearest metro station, fairly close and easy walk to the White House.
Overall- while I enjoyed my stay just fine, I probably will not go back unless the make some updates to the decor. Also, if you sign-up for Kimpton rewards, you get free wifi and a $10 worth of mini bar goodies (at least that is what we got).

Stayed here in October 2012 and loved it! My girlfriend and I were in town for a wedding, and it was nice to be at a hotel that felt 100% safe to be walking through the lobby holding hands, etc. While this is the case in general in DC, there were little touches that made it not just not-unfriendly, but downright welcoming. The brochures and website, for one, feature couples of all walks of life. The price was awesome, and when we arrived we were given a free room upgrade--to the room featured on most of the website photos! Saw lots of people with their animals, and the staff in the lobby all seemed animal-friendly--so by policy and practice, an animal family hotel. Overall, the experience at this hotel made me want to seek Kimpton family hotels in other cities.

Green Features: Easy to save water if you just follow the signs about bed making and towel placement, etc.

Mike Robinson, Assistant General Manager: ReadyToRelo, we are very glad to read that you felt safe and had a lot of fun while staying with us here at the Helix. We know that the "Welcome" is one of the most important parts of staying at a hotel because that is what makes or breaks the "home away from home" feel, so we're pumped that we nailed it! Thank you so much for your business, please come visit again soon.

The Helix is definitely the kitschiest of Kimptons in DC, but it's fun, clean and the location is unbeatable. The rooms are certainly small, but it's a DC hotel -- so that's to be expected just about anywhere. If you don't want to be in the mod aesthetics of the Helix, then try the Palomar on the other side of Dupont Circle. My friends and I always stay in one or the other, and the quality at both is excellent. Don't miss the free wine happy hour at 5, and invite your friends. A solid go-to for a night in the city.

I frequent Kimpton hotels and am generally a big fan. This property is somewhat special in that I would not stay here if I were traveling on business or solo. However, on a recent visit to DC with my family, this was a perfect spot. The bunk rooms were a huge hit with my boys, as were the games, the easel, "our" fish etc. The price was right and the location convenient to just about everything DC has to offer. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and worked out great for a family visit to see the sights of Washington.

Room Tip: If you have children, consider the bunk rooms. They worked out great and had a separate television s...

I remember reading a small PR blurb about the just opened Helix in Vogue or Elle when I was in high school. The hotel's decor was described as a cool juxtaposition of 50s vintage and something modern. That was during the 90s though.
We stayed here recently. Had to attend an event but needed a hotel that accepts pets because we have 2 special needs animals that no one will board. Kimpton hotels are all pet friendly but the others in the DC area are more expensive and were already fully booked when we attempted to make our reservation.
Helix's decor now feels slightly dated and could probably use an update. It really wouldn't describe this as a boutique hotel. In terms of decor, it's not special enough. Mostly a younger crowd stays here or visits the bar. Yes, I agree with the person who said that the hotel has a frat house feel although the people who stay here seem just slightly more hipster than your average frat boy.
Everything in our room was pretty clean. We were given a room facing the back of the hotel with a view of some dumpsters that get emptied in the early AM hours - very loud and will wake you up. We didn't hear our neighbors all that much. Nice, comfy bed. All the typical hotel stuff is either in the room (iron, blow dryer, etc) or the front desk will bring it to you (coffee maker, toothbrush, etc - complementary).
We transported our dogs in extra large carriers. The hotel will let you keep your pets in the room unattended only if kept in a crate or carrier. Some people did this and said their animals were not bothered (although I guess you'd want to be damn sure the door to the crate or carrier is one in which your pets can't get their heads stuck while you're not there!) The hotel will also refer you to a petsitter or doggie day care upon request.
We ordered room service a couple of times for breakfast. The weekday chef is excellent and the french toast was perfect. We used seamless otherwise. The hotel's daytime staff are pretty wonderful but the evening staff are pretty meh. One of the barmaids likes to harass the guests.
Be forewarned - this hotel is not close to any Metro stop, which really sucks! Also, if you drive, you are pretty much stuck with using the hotel's valet parking because the other local parking garages have worse rates, are not open 24/7 or all days of the week, etc. It was $42/night during our stay. The neighborhood, near Logan Circle, is okay. 24-hour CVS around the corner. Whole Foods is also around the corner. Lots of restaurants, including Starr's Le Diplomate, within a few blocks as well as lots of home decor stores.
Overall, I think this is a pretty decent hotel, especially for the price in DC.
