“A great hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2011

Great hotel with an exceptional staff. Everyone, from the front desk to the maintenance staff, had a smile and a conversational word.

I am an author, so I liked having a separate area where I was able to work on my latest novel while my wife slept undisturbed in another section of the room.

Walking into the Helix is like being trasported to the set of Miami Vice in 1984. The hotel is deco enough to be located in South Beach but is walking distance to the White House.

Nothing about this hotel gets in the way of enjoying your time in D.C. It is not fancy by any means but there is nothing threadbare either. Everything about the room is funky, from the sheer curtain around the bed to the tv on a pole to the leapard print robe in the closet. You have to pay for internet unless you join the Klimpton awards program (which is free).

The bar is a good place to kick it in the evening and they have a limited variety of free drinks during happy hour. If you are looking for a gym, they have a broom closet with a couple of cardio machine and some free weights in it. I thought it was ironic that the exercise room was actually smaller than the hotel room. But it did the trick. There's no pool but that seems pretty standard for D.C.

All in all, if you are looking for a decent hotel in D.C. that has more ambiance than opulence, this is the place for you.

Room small but clean, comfortable and serviceable, staff super friendly and helpful, location great, price right. Stayed on after a conference to do the sights and will definitely stay here or at another Klimpton again. Moved from a tony, pricey conference hotel and much preferred the relaxed and fun atmosphere of the Helix.

I stayed at the Helix for a three-day business trip to DC. I found the "Retro" rooms to be clean and inexpensive, and the location is very convenient, walking distance to major attractions and businesses. It is also only about five short blocks from the McPherson Metro stop so you save your cab fare if you don't mind a short walk. There are a number of restauarants closeby, as well as a Whole Foods, so you can save on meals by eating in your room, which is equipped with a fridge. Wireless internet access is free. All in all, great value in what can be a very expensive city.

A gem and a great value in a fun location that we will certainly revisit! A true "boutique" with personalized service - not the type of hotel that uses the term "boutique" to cloak "inadequate" or as a euphemism for "no services." Rather, the Helix is a breath of fresh air that is full service, and can be a great vacation spot as well as a perfect spot for business travel. It's fun, has a great crowd, but is not the least bit noisy in the evenings, and the beds are the INCREDIBLE - best night's sleep in a hotel I've ever had. Kid friendly suites are perfect, and the service is relaxed yet high end. Relative to the tourist anthills, it's a bit of a walk to the monuments/mall with small kids, but this is easily navigable by simply grabbing the 14th street bus right outside the hotel and the Helix is close to other attractions like Embassy Row. In addition, some of the double decker "hop on/hop off" tours go right by the hotel. For adults or teens, the walk is completely fine.

The restaurant scene around the hotel is unbeatable and not touristy, and the hotel is very close to business areas of DC.

The only "con" I can think of is one shared by many hotels - with two elevators, the wait can be a bit long during "rush hours," but it clears up quickly. Just tack on a few minutes in the morning and you'll be fine.

Bottom line: A perfect find for value, service and combination of practicality and fun and we feel privileged to have discovered this gem in DC!

The room was impressive. Signed up to the Kimpton In Touch - benefits include free internet, free continental breakfast, free nightly cocktail - thought it would be great stay. It declined slowly over the week. Cocktail requested was a Bloody Mary - pretty basic cocktail. Was told they don't make those. Rang room service one night - no answer. Needed to print - had to use the business center - $7.95/15min and then $0.80 for a b/w page. Also, I was rung one morning to question the 'do not disturb' sign I had on the door - doesn't ringing someone equate to disturbing them ? Other than these faults it was a good stay.
