“Advertised as "100 Years Old" and Proud of It”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2014

Hotel Harrington will be a memorable experience for a long time to come. It is exactly as advertised, "100 years old," this year. Everywhere you look you see history. From the mailbox to the room venting, electrical conduit, and plates that must be covering the initial gas lighting in the rooms...the place left me wondering exactly where we were in our everyday lives back in 1914. This hotel is the last family owned and operated hotel in DC. It is close to everything! Walk or take any of a variety of transportation. Leave your car parked and enjoy the city instead of dealing with the traffic. (Parking is free!) The room we enjoyed was quiet and the beds offered a good night's sleep. There are several restaurants close by, including two in the hotel, offering a nice variety of eateries. Best of all, the price of the rooms is quite reasonable. The next time we're in DC we will definitely go back to the Harrington.

Room Tip: Go with the understanding that the Harrington Hotel prides itself on its history. This is what sets...

This decrepit 100 year old pile of bricks is somehow likable. The staff is friendly and helpful. The owners are attempting to modernize and maintain but there is so much to do. Our room was clean. They had installed expensive wallpaper over inexpertly patched plaster. The beds were very firm but tolerable. I would advise them to add memory foam mattress pads. There was one unused outlet in each room. The paint was chipped and bits of plaster drifted from an old ceiling patch. The vintage bathroom tiles had been regrouted by a novice. The only way to reduce the very cold A/C was to stand on a chair and close the vent. There was a fridge and a hotpot with plenty of instant coffee, sugar, and creamer. Nothing was actually broken, just patched. Breakfast in the restaurant was decent. We had a good time and will definitely return!

Room Tip: There are no ice machines above the 6th floor.

We needed a place to stay for two nights while we were in DC. We wanted a resonable price near the National Mall and a room for 5 adults (so no small beds). We got exactly what we needed. The room was spacious and clean with a large closet. There were a lot of choices around for food, from Macdonalds to an English pub type restaurant. We were only two blocks from the Mall so no need for Metro. The staff was friendly and helpful and we were even able to check in early.
I loved it and will stay there again.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms on higher floors since these are newer.

Having booked this hotel and then read reviews we were very sceptical of our choice of hotel. The hotel is old without the mod cons of newer branded ones we are used to. The room was spacious with three beds, we had a fridge. The AC was noisy but worked, the bed was old but the sheets were clean and the maid service was good. There was a strange smell in the corridor and lift, coming from the restaurant below. The hotel is not helped by the two low key restaurants adjoining. We did not eat in either as there was a lot of choice locally. The parking is two blocks away and was fine, they have a nearer lot now apparently. Excellent for being so close to the museums.

Room Tip: Ask for a family room.

If you want a cheap hotel near many of D.C.'s attractions and you don't really care about the hotel ambiance, then stop reading now and go ahead and book at the Harrington. For everyone else, I think the word the best describes this hotel is decrepit. It's old (celebrated its 100th anniversary) but whereas some old hotels are charming, the Harrington needs to be gutted in order to bring back what I imagine was it's former glory.

The positives: the staff were efficient (one even cracked a smile) and the room was clean. They had a hairdryer and mini iron/ironing board in the room for guest use. Restaurant downstairs seemed like a very hopping place. Also, the hotel did provide free wifi and it worked, if a bit slow. And my room on the 6th floor was fairly quiet, which is a plus in D.C.

The negatives: The rooms are small (not a huge surprise in D.C.) but the room I got just looked beat. Carpet was worn, baseboards were nicked and chipped, TV from the 90s and the closet emitted a musty odor that made me think twice about hanging anything in it (as well as the fact the door handle was on the floor inside). The A/C was also not controllable, so I spent the night with my teeth chattering because I was so cold. The bed was highly uncomfortable and I didn't get much sleep--I hope they replace this first when a remodel does happen!!!! Among the more annoying quirks the room had only a few outlets. Not surprising in an old hotel, but I had to crawl under the desk to plug in my charger and blow dry my hair without a mirror the next morning because there weren't any in the bathroom.

Again, this is not the worst hotel I've ever stayed at, but it's certainly in the top ten. Everyone's tastes are different, however, and many people I'm sure would find this a decent place to stay, if not the best. The old saying holds more than a bit of truth: you get what you pay for.

The hotel is a classic 60's style building. The AC control consisted of a metal rod to the air vent over head. No actual thermostat. The room was small, but functional. We were satisfied for our one overnight, but may consider something different for a longer stay. The staff were excellent and very friendly. The location of it couldn't be beat.

Stayed in the family suite of hotel Harrington . Must say it was spacious to give the four of us enough space and best were the two bathrooms . The location is awesome with all major attractions and great restaurants a short walk away . The restaurant downstairs served a decent breakfast. All in all a good place to stay if visiting Washington ..
