“Great location, Very Happy with Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2005

My husband and I stayed at the Grand Hyatt for Easter weekend, Friday through Monday. We got a rate of $116 a night through the Hyatt Web site, which included the breakfast (AAA special). We were given a nice interior room, with view of atrium. Nice room, the usual furnishings you would expect from a better hotel. The bathroom was very nice.
If the buffett breakfast had not been free, we would not have had it. It was OK but on the first day I found 2 hair strands in the oatmeal (gross!), food was mediocre, and the wait staff, despite their best efforts, were overwhelmed.
The front desk was very nice and helpful, the concierge NOT! Do not waste your time waiting in line to speak with them. One of them actually made us wait while he was on a personal phone conversation.
The location of the Grand Hyatt can't be beat. Easy and safe access to the Metro, all our restaurants were within walking distance. We easily walked to the White House, Federal Triangle, and National Gallery/Archives -- part of the what's interesting is to be in the city and see the sites along the way. However, you can easily get to the tourist stops via the metro, if you don't feel like a leisurely walk through the city.
We will likely stay here again, given the location, special pricing, and room comfort.

Nice and Fine are the words I would use to describe our short one night Washington DC tourist stay.

Recently stayed in two adjoining rooms for our family of five. Checked in at 3PM, and although the desk clerk said one of the rooms was not ready yet, when we went to unload our luggage in the "Ready" room, the adjoining doors were open and both rooms had been cleaned. Nicely appointed rooms, but we were assigned to an exterior room (as opposed to the interior rooms overlooking the Grand lobby) overlooking the demolition of what we were told was the former Convention Center. Also, some street noise was noticeable in the middle of the night.

Sunday breakfast buffet was nice (and complimentary due to a AAA package promotion).

The downside was the health club is $11/day, but when I stated that me and the kids only wanted to go swimming for a few minutes, they said $6/day would be the charge. Fine. We went in to learn that the miniature pool in a dingy room was just chlorinated, and we would have to wait twenty minutes. Enough said, no pool for us and the health club removed the daily charge.

Although the easily accessible Metro can get you most places in town, I am NOT sure that this is a prime location for tourist sight-seeing. The White House and Smithsonian Museums are NOT within most peoples walking distance, and with so many hotels closer to those locations, this would not be my first choice the next time in town. However, this is a nice Hyatt (not the best, but certainly not the worst), and would not be opposed to staying here again.

We stayed at the Grand Hyatt for 97$/night for two nights with a Priceline bid. This hotel is located directly above the "Metro Central" stop on the Metro line, yellow, blue and red lines. You do not have to leave hotel property to access the Metro to tour D.C....we used it to go to the Capitol Hill area. There are lots of conventioneers here since it's located directly across from the Convention Center. We only ate at the Sports Bar type restaurant; the food was pretty good. The main drawback to this hotel are the beds....the mattresses are way too soft....one of our double beds even had a board underneath it. I had read similar comments earlier on trip advisor, and this situation still has not been remedied. Other than that, the Grand Hyatt was well located, the staff was great, and of course, we ended up with a bargain price, as compared to their web site price of $339/night.

This is a great hotel for business or pleasure. The location is very convenient especially with the Metro accessible directly from the Hotel taking you to any of the main tourist areas in a matter of minutes.

Staff were very friendly and check-in easy. We booked using priceline for around $80/night and never felt like "second-class" guests in any way. I dont know if it is typical but the Hotel was offering guests free champange (or sparkling wine anyway) in the early evening while we were there.

The only problem I had with the hotel is their closure of the restaurant while we were there meaning the only choice for food was greasy fries and buffalo wings stuff from the sports bar. Not acceptable from a 5* hotel in my view - unfortunately in a snowstorm we simply couldn't go anywhere else.

Breakfast options are the typical overpriced hotel buffet or a much better cafe in the lobby offering a wide range of things from cereal, bagels, hot food, starbucks etc.

All in all this is a good hotel

Stayed here on a $80/night PL bid 2/16-2/19. Was given a room on the "Gold Passport" level as I am a GP member. Great hotel - convenient to the Metro station (just an escalator ride from the lobby). Would stay here again on a PL bid, but wouldn't pay the normal $250+ per night.

We thouroughly enjoyed our stay at the Grand Hyatt. The location and accomotations are perfect. We utilized the Metro on several occasions which is just underneath the hotel. I would definately recommend getting yourself a color coded Metro map or bringing a red, blue, orange & green highliter. The Metro was confusing the first day but got easier as we learned the ropes. We also took the Trolley one day which enabled us to cover a lot of ground in easy fashion. It stops in front of the Hyatt. We walked to the Spy Museum, the Ford Theatre, the Mint and the Mall, all a fifteen minute max walk.

The hotel has a great deli, the Zephr, very reasonable, fresh, quick food. The breakfast buffet at the hotel was good but expensive. The Grand Slam restaurant in the hotel was dark, smoky but had decent food. We went to Capital City Brewing Co, Oceanaire(expensive) and the Hard Rock Cafe, all within a 5-10 minute walk from the hotel and the food and service were excellent at all three places.

The rooms were very nice, fresh and clean. We had a king bed which was plush, the kids had the two doubles which were not quite as nice. They got their room at half price.

The Zoo was fantastic as was the Spy Museum, the Mint, the National Cemetary, the Memorials and all the Smithsonian museums. The kids had a great time ice skating at the mall.

Cabs are cheap in DC. Just ask the approximate price before you take off because they don't use meters. DCA Reagan National Airport was a 10-15 minute ride from the Hyatt. We took a cab to the hotel for $18.00 for 5 of us. The cab back to the airport charged $30.00. It should of been $18.00 but I failed to ask the price before we left the hotel and he got me. We never had a need for a car during our stay.

The Grand Hyatt is a beautiful, elegant, comfortable hotel in a very nice part of downtown. Never any security issues walking at night.

We spent a lot of time trying to decide where to stay and in the end feel that we made the best choice.

The Grand Hyatt is a wonderful place to stay. The room, which was quite large, looked newly renovated, decorated in a pleasant, tasteful manner. The bathroom was large and very clean. The bed was fine, although not as nice as the "heavenly beds" at Westins for example. The staff, from the front desk to the housekeeping to the concierge were pleasant and accommodating. They were very responsive to any request or concern. On my first night there was a group of noisy teenagers slamming doors in the hallway, which kept me awake for quite a while. When I told the front desk, they offered to send security upstairs and offered my room for 1/2 off + a free breakfast. I don't know about you, but I have never had a hotel offer to knock off 1/2 the cost of the room--I was impressed. The atrium of the hotel is very attractive and the hotel is directly connected to the Metro. Incredibly convenient. Room service was prompt and the food quite good, as was the breakfast buffet. Food is very expensive however. Also, despite being a frequent Hyatt guest, they charge you for health club use, ($11) which is disappointing. Either that or take the "business plan" at arrival for $20/day which gives you breakfast and health club use. The neighborhood is not as pleasant for strolling for restaurants and shopping as DuPont Circle, but it is very convenient to all the sites. I highly recommend this hotel.
