“Great Value for Washington DC”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2012

Really liked this hotel. The location was great, situated in a safe neighborhood and just short walk to the metro, stores, restaurants and Georgetown. The room was large and very comfortable with a nice view of the town and river. We were upgraded to suite upon arrival which was a really nice perk. The staff was very friendly and responsive to our needs. Overall a very nice boutique hotel that I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to stay in DC.

I was in Washington for business, and did not need a hotel with a lot of amenities. The hotel is on a quiet street, and that is what I wanted. The best part was the spaciousness of the room and the small kitchenette. I was able to walk to Georgetown in a short amount of time one evening for dinner, which was nice. One evening I placed a dinner order from my room at the Inn's restaurant, Notti Bianche, but had to go pick it up myself (I was not feeling well, so would have preferred room service).

All in all, I would stay here for a business trip again.

We are pleased that you enjoyed the peace and quiet of our location. Yes we are snuggled in a nice residential area in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood. We find that guest do love the size of our rooms along with the added touch of the kitchenette. We apologize that room service is not one of the amenities that we provide and are very humbled that you still allowed our restaurant to serve you in lieu of your not feeling well and having to leave the comfort of your room for your meal.

We are happy you enjoyed your stay with us and we hope you stay with us again and perhaps have the time to dine in at our restaurant.

We look forward to your next visit!

We stayed here recently. It is generally quite clean. When I noted a problem, it was taken care of. The staff is nice. The location is great - 2 short blocks to the Metro. Quiet, safe, and there's a Whole Foods across the street from the Metro. The bed, sofa, and sofa bed were comfortable.
Downside: it's a bit run down. The furniture looked nice. However, much of the furniture leaned. The table in the kitchenette and two lamps leaned.
There was no lobby, and it was small downstairs. However, our room was very comfortable.

Room Tip: The restaurant next door was quite good. Buy food at Whole Foods for your breakfast. Eat at Paul...

Dear FamTrav04,

We are happy to see that our location and the level of service that was provided met your expectations.

We are in the process of embarking upon our much anticipated lobby and guest room renovation. We will be upgraded the lobby, adding another computer to the business center, adding a fitness center and changing some of the items you mentioned in your review. It is our hope that when you return on your next visit, that you can help us celebrate our new look.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review on Trip Advisor.

We recently stayed at the George Washington University Inn. In general, it's a great hotel! It was very clean & well maintained. Also, it's within walking distance to the Foggy Bottom Metro Station, George Washington University and that university's hospital. It's also close to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. One can walk there from the hotel or take a free wheelchair-accessible shuttle from the Foggy Bottom Metro Station to there. The hotel is located in a nice, generally quiet and safe residential area that we enjoyed walking around in at all times of the day & night. It's also very reasonably priced as compared to other hotels in D.C. Also, the room is a nice size. We had 4 people in our group and never felt cramped in a small space,

However, there are some negative aspects to this hotel that I think should be modified, though. I use a wheelchair and some aspects of the hotel are not that wheelchair-accessible. For example, the front entrance to the hotel has steps leading up to it with no ramp. The ramp is at the back entrance of the hotel and one has to push a button so that one of the hotel employees can let you in the hotel. Then, there is an elevator near that entrance that can be used to go up to the hotel's rooms. However, it is generally used as a service elevator by the hotel's employees to get around the hotel. Therefore, it must be activated by a card that only the employees have. A person with a mobility disability cannot use this elevator independently. I always had to have somebody else activate the elevator for me. There is another elevator that the hotel's guests can use. However, there are also steps leading up to that elevator. There is a more expensive Doubletree Hotel across the street from the back entrance of the George Washington University Inn which also has steps at its front entrance. However, right next to the steps, there is a ramp. That makes me wonder why the George Washington University Inn couldn't do the same thing. In general, the bathroom in our room was
great. It was big and the tub and the shower bench that I sat on to take my shower were wonderful! However, there is a rather high threshold going into the bathroom that was difficult for me to go over in my manual wheelchair. I imagine that it would be much more difficult for a person in a power wheelchair to get over.

Another aspect of our room is the air conditioner/heater. We stayed in this hotel during a hot spell in June when the temperatures were in the high 80's and 90's and the nights stayed very warm. The air conditioner worked almost too well. At night, when we put the air conditioner on, I had to use 2 or 3 blankets to not be freezing as a result of the air-conditioning unit. There should be a way to better regulate that unit.

However, in spite of the negative aspects of this hotel, I would stay here again. I just hope that, before we return, the negative aspects of this hotel are fixed.

We want to thank you for staying with us at the GWU Inn. We are happy to see that you enjoyed our location and found our staff to be helpful. Yes we are in a great spot for touring as well as getting around on public transportation. We love that the cleanliness of the hotel and size of the room both met your expectations as well. You expressed that although the bathroom was spacious that the threshold was a bit challenging. We have passed on this info to the proper individuals and you can be assured that this will be looked into immediately as your comfort is our first priority and we definitely would not like for that to be a deal breaker in your decision to remain one of our valued guest. We understand your comments in regards to the elevator and we extend our sincerest apology for the inconvenience of not being able to access the elevators at will without the assistance of others. The Front desk staff has since shared your comments with the engineering department and you will be happy to know that it was fixed immediately once bought to their attention. Engineering is working on getting the thermostats set on a more reasonable setting which will allow them to be more temperature controlled. We are days away from beginning the renovation of our public areas and the lobby is on the top of the list. We are definitely looking into ways to make accessing our entrance more handicap friendly.

We certainly appreciate the time you have spared in order to share both positive and negative feedback with us. It is greatly appreciated and your comments will be considered.

2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2012

We chose the GWU Inn because of its proximity to GW's campus and because their website and the various reviews made it seem like a 'high quality' hotel. We were extremely disappointed with the hotel, our room and our overall experience.
The hotel is (like many in the area) a converted apartment building. This is why each of the rooms come with a kitchenette, etc. Like many of these 'rehabs', the degree the owner converts the property from an apartment to a hotel determines the quality and 'feel'. In our opinion, this hotel has done a very poor job. There is essentially no lobby where one can lounge or meet. If there were, it would be uninviting as the entrance looks out on a cramped high-walled driveway, clogged with vehicles.
The staff (doorman/valet and front desk person) were very pleasant and accommodating.
Our room was bad enough that we planned on requesting a room change. But when we went to the front desk, there was a man before us who was just finishing complaining about his room, requesting a new room, and was told that there were no open rooms available. So we decided to just persevere.
Our room had stained/water damaged ceiling, the bathroom was in terrible shape; broken tiles, a tub that had been re-surfaced so long ago that there was cracks and voids in the resurfacing that made it look and feel filthy, poor caulking, etc., etc.
The under-counter refrigerator would not close unless one opened the adjacent cabinet door and leaned against it to make it clear. The air conditioning was great if you were directly in front of it, but in the sleeping area, there was no ventilation/cooling. The mattress was old, lumpy and uncomfortable.
The furniture/decor was old and dated (not in bad shape, but just 'college dorm' quality.
This is not what we expect for $300/night or any price. Overnight parking cost about $40 which is ridiculous considering they don't give guests the option to self-park and street parking would be impossible. The website makes it feel like a high quality boutique hotel which it's definitely not.
We would not recommend this hotel to anyone we like and do not plan on staying here again.

Dear MrHanky1,

Thank you for posting a review on Trip Advisor. We enjoy the positive feedback so we can celebrate our success as well as the negative so we can learn from our mistakes and take immediate action to correct our short comings.

Please accept my sincere apologies for you and your family not enjoying our hotel. This is certainly not indicative of our team. I can assure you that we have already taken actions to correct the issues that you mentioned in the room. I can also tell you that our multi-phase renovation starts next week. We are replacing all the hallway wall covering and light fixtures. Inside the room, we are replacing a lot of the future and fixtures as well. Lastly we will be moving to the lobby and main enterance. The front desk will be moved so that it is facing the door so our team can see and assist all the guests coming in. Along with that we will be adding a fitness center to the lobby level. On the exterior we will change the signage and the arrival sequence so it is more inviting. Lighting and landscaping will be changed so it has more of a courtyard feel.

Again my sincerest apologies for you not having a good stay.

Stayed here while visiting colleges with my son. GWU Inn felt lke we were returning home instead of staying in a hotel. Location was perfect, near Foggy Bottom Metro, close to Whole Foods, great restaurants, Starbucks , quiet residential location, friendly doormen. My king sized bed was extremely comfortable and my son said sofa bed was comfortable too. Only problem was the refrigerator in our kitchenette didn't close. I would recommend this hotel.

Dear Mizbailey,

Thank you for your post on Trip Advisor. We are happy to see that you found our hotel to feel like you were coming home. It is important to all of our team here that our guests feel this way. Being located in such a wonderful neighborhood also makes a stay here feel a little bit more comfortable. A good night's sleep is what we want our guests to have and it appears as if you and your son got just that.

We were sorry that the refrigerator wasn't cooperating and you had trouble closing it. We will make sure that our Engineering team takes care of that for our future guests.

Please do come and stay with us again when you are in the area. And good luck to your son in his college search.
