“Excellent location, wifi substandard”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2012

We chose this hotel for the location to the Mall and museums. The location did not disappoint. And, around the corner are various coffee shops, banks, pub/bars and restaurants. This is important because the hotel wifi had a very weak signal so I would go to Starbucks to use their free wifi. When we inquired, the front desk had no explanation and offered to move us to another room. We decided not to change rooms because of the hassle. If hotels advertise free wifi, they should make sure it's adequate especially since this is in a business district. The wifi in the lobby and breakfast room was acceptable but not acceptable in our 4th floor annex room.

Housekeeping was inconsistent. We hung our towels on the rack (as instructed) the first night only to have them all replaced. On the 3rd night, we didn't think housekeeping had come by at 5pm because the beds weren't made. (Note that we put the beds together in a tidy fashion so they weren't a mess to begin with, but still.) It turns out they emptied the garbage cans and replaced the towels and that was it.

I concur with the other reviews that the kitchen sink is too small to do dishes. However, the kitchen was nicely appointed with a full size refrigerator with an ice maker, 2 burner electric stove and a large microwave. The kitchen could have been stocked with kitchen towels, however, as we had to use the bathroom towels.

The front desk staff were all very friendly and helpful.

There is a computer and printer in the lobby which was helpful to print boarding passes.

On another note, I booked this hotel via their website 6 months prior. 2 months prior, I checked the website again and the rate had dropped $100/night. I'm glad I checked again as the original rate was very pricey.

I chose the Capitol Hill Suites based on price and location and wasn't disappointed. I was in DC for just a few days with one work commitment, but knew I wanted to hit the highlights like the capitol and the mall. It was an ideal spot, accessible to taxi cabs, bus and metro lines.

Clean, modern accommodations nestled within a nice neighborhood. A simple but fulfilling breakfast, too, with bagels, muffins, fresh fruit, hard boiled eggs, yogurt and cereal. Couldn't ask for more!

Pleasant staff arranged for a cab for my ride back to the airport. Lovely!

Splendid location for touring area sights. Right in a neighborhood with a pet friendly park a block away (we brought our dog so this was a bonus we don't usually get in big city hotel districts). We also brought our bikes and found it very bike friendly from the hotel to the Capitol buildings, straight through to the Vietnam Memorial and on to the White House!

Smaller hotel room with queen bed and AC unit too close to bed (unfortunately we needed AC on high because of a crazy heat wave...cold air blasting in our faces all night). Room clean but we didn't get housekeeping every day (we did ask just for towels one day and our request was answered promptly). Also, $75 pet fee not plainly advertised on hotel website and we would have appreciated reading about it first. But excellent room rate for a holiday weekend made up for that slight inconvenience.

Continental breakfast was fairly typical, but still outstanding in terms of freshness of items and constant restocking by extremely efficient and friendly breakfast staff. Which gets me to the great part about Capitol Hill Suites.

This hotel employs outstanding employees. We arrived later on Sunday May 27th to a Front Desk Manager who was friendly, professional, tactful --- a truly delightful young man. Same with the porter who assisted us with our luggage and our bikes (they stored our bikes indoors to keep them safe, nice touch).

Front Desk Manager upgraded us to a room with a mini fridge and sink and dishes which was a real bonus. Later that night, we discovered we didn't have an in-room safe so we approached front desk again. Same manager was there, and also the hotel maintenance man who installed an in-room safe promptly and efficiently for us. Super guys. Front Desk and porter staff changed on Monday, but lady at the front desk and the weekday porter were equally accommodating and friendly. Housekeepers we did encounter were lovely and efficient.

This smaller hotel has been updated in a funky style that gives it a contemporary feel. But it's the customer service and the neighborhood feel that makes Capitol Hill Suites a genuine winner. Keep up the excellent work all of you! Our stay was really enjoyable because of your efforts.

Room Tip: No swimming pool

We stayed in a one-bedroom unit with two cats. We live five blocks away and had to move out of our house for a week to have some work done. It was nice to have a full-sized refrigerator, but the tiny sink made doing any food prep or dish washing difficult. Overall the stay was fine. The housekeeper was very nice. We had two maintenance problems--one resolved very quickly and the other took two-hours to resolve. Time I could have used to go to work, but I wanted to stay while the maintenance guy was in the room because of the cats. As a neighbor I know that the hotel is in a good location, but out of the way of most tourist hotels. It's on a quiet street with good access to the Metro.

Room Tip: Some rooms face the alley, so ask for a room facing the street for better daylight. The hotel isn...

I stayed here for one night because I had business neighborhood. I loved the place. The room was very comfortable with a nice chair, Queen bed, desk and plenty of space. It was all clean and looked cared for. The bathroom was small and looked old but it was ok.

The staff was very nice and all to happy to help out.

The neighborhood is wonderful to walk around during the day and there some nice restaurants near by. The weather was so nice I asked the hotel for a restaurant recommendation and they suggested a casual place just a few blocks away which had a great outdoor area to relax and enjoy the sunshine. It was a lovely evening.

Downside is the neighborhood is a little deserted at night. I went out at 10 pm and was the only one around.

In the morning the hotel offered continential breakfast which was ok but the room was small and cramped. Maybe it was because they said they had a group in the other room. The breakfast food was ok but finding a seat was hard and the tables were not being wiped down. There was cold ceral but no spoons. They finally got me a plastic spoon. Breakfast was not quite as upscale as the rest of the hotel, still I loved my stay and I would go back in a heartbeat if I had business in the area again.

We stayed at Capital Hill Suites during National Police Week this year. We picked this hotel based on the excellent reviews. It's location was within walking distance to the Capital where the memorial service was to be held. We will probably not stay here again though. We checked in on Friday afternoon. On Saturday we went out for the day. When we returned around 6 pm housekeeping still had not been to the room. We left again and returned around 11:30 pm. Still no housekeeping visit. We called the front desk to inquire only to be accused of having our "do not disturb" sign out when in fact we didn't. We asked for fresh towels and they were brought up at midnight. Sunday we again left for the day and returned around 5 pm and still no housekeeping visit. We went to the desk and inquired. They were puzzled but said they would get it taken care of. So.......we had spent 3 days there with no real housekeeping services. Our trash cans were overflowing with water bottles and we had towels on the floor as their signs instructed you to do so for fresh ones daily. What a mess. Housekeeping didn't seem to work on the weekends here. Come Monday morning though there was a knock at the door at about 8:30 am -- "Housekeeping" - Heck NO? Are you kidding me? They didn't come all weekend now they want to get me out of bed at the crack of dawn? Not a happy camper.

PRO:
The location was great as the Metro station was a block away. That was a huge plus.

CON:
Nobody was concerned about lack of housekeeping service. HUGE MINUS!
Nobody could direct us to a grocery or convenience store to purchase water or other necessaties. Water in the lobby was available for $2 a bottle.
Hotel overpriced for the quality & service.

Room Tip: Ask for upper corner room. You get two windows and are farther from the elevator.

Spacious room, excellent continental breakfast, good room service. The will clean the room at your convenience (including late in the afternoon), and they wash your dishes. Valet can take a while to return your vehicle, but they are usually quick enough.

The gym is closed but there is one a block and a half away (free for guests).

Beds (mattress pads) are comfortable; couch bed not so much.
