“comfy and convenient”

One Washington Circle Hotel

Jul 21, 2008

We just returned from a 7 night trip to DC and were pleasantly surprised with our accomodations at the Circle Hotel. The location was perfect- Only 1 block away from the metro and in a very safe neighborhood (actually part of the GWU campus). Some reviewers have complained about the sirens from the GWU trauma unit. I found that the trauma unit was not close enough to be an issue for our family. We heard sirens all over the city, not just around our hotel. We were never bothered by loud noise at the hotel.
The front desk staff was quite friendly and helpful during our stay. It was obvious that english was the second language of many of the front desk staff, but their communication skills were not a problem for us. Even when we turned our air down low enough to freeze up our unit, they were very courteous and had maintenence working on it within the hour.
Our room was very spacious and comfy for the price. The beds and furniture were quite comfortable and it was nice to return in the evening to beds that were turned down and chocolates on the pillows. The bath robe added a nice touch too.
I was a little surprised that there were no vending/ice machines on the property. When I called the front desk, they delievered the overflowing ice bucket to our room within a few minutes- again, great service.
The pool is outdoors. It's not very large, but good for the kids. The water was pretty chilly since it is shaded for much of the day. There's a lifeguard on duty til 8pm each night and towels are provided.
The only thing I would change about our stay would be to have chairs on the balcony. Otherwise, this stay was definitely top notch.

“Better off somewhere else”

One Washington Circle Hotel

Jul 4, 2008

Recently, my family and I stayed at One Washington Circle Hotel and we were nothing but discusted. Upon arrival, both people at the front desk hardly spoke English and refused to put us in the room that we had reserved although we had the confirmation reservation printed out with us. Our request of a non-smoking room was fulfilled although we had to stay in a room that was right above and was once a smoking room. The kitchen was filthy and still had food in the sink when we entered. If you like your nights interupted by sirens, this is the place for you. The hospital is right across the street and sirens are nonstop. It is in a location close to the subway which is good so we could run, not walk upon our exit.

“Nice Location”

This hotel is in a very nice location in the city. It's right near the Orange Metro line that can take you to the National Mall and near many restaurants/bars. It's also directly across from a hospital, which unfortunately means sirens; thus, country dwellers might find it too loud.

My room was very cheap due to construction they were doing on the balconies when I stayed; however, my room turned out to be a large suite complete with kitchenette! It was very posh.

Positives:
--Good location (except for noise): near restaurants, metro, hospital, landmarks, Georgetown, etc.
--Good price (at least when I went)
--Large, posh rooms

My complaints:
--They did not do a thorough cleaning job and I found a condom wrapper in the room that had not been found by the maid service!
--There is street parking but it is very limited and you'll probably have to pay $20/day to keep your car in their garage!

As we needed to be in Washington DC for 5+ days, we wanted to find a suite hotel with a kitchen and a little more space. We also wanted to avoid the $650+ per night prices of the 5-star hotels we’re most accustomed to and were willing to live with a little less luxury for a week.

We moved to One Washington Circle after leaving the River Inn (see my review of that very disappointing property). This place is exactly what we were looking for. We have a spacious one-bedroom apartment with Central Air Conditioning, a nice clean kitchen, a separate dining area, etc. It’s not the Four Seasons, and there is a little more street noise than would be ideal, plus the high-speed Internet access is available only with a network cord, not wireless. But this has been a very comfortable place to spend the week, well located, very reasonably priced, and yes, we would stay at One Washington Circle again.

“Great if you get the right room”

We stayed in a Grand Stateroom for 5 nights. It was great. My 11-year old son says, AWESOME. The room had a separate bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room, 1 ½ bathrooms, a giant balcony overlooking the blooming trees and Washington Circle. Unlike other reviewers, we found it to be quiet enough, very few sirens but an occasional guy yelling across the street, in typical inner city fashion. The location is fabulous, within walking distance to Georgetown, the monuments, market, and 1-2 blocks to metro. At $161 a night it was a good price. The hotel bargained with us and reduced the price to that amount. The suite would be fine for hosting a cocktail party. It is comfortable, sunlit and spacious, not fancy but in good condition.

However, the first room we saw like was a dungeon. Dark, dimly lit, small balcony overlooking an unattractive building and rimmed by heavy lead curtains, no sunlight, and claustrophobic. That was the room we had booked, and the prospect of 5 days in there was met with a slight sense of dread. It was a one-bedroom suite still, yet managed to be small, narrow and dark. They showed us another room which was no better. Because the one-bedroom suites all face either west or east, it appears that they all would be dark, certainly the ones on the east side. My son, who is helping me write this review, says that room was fine, as he liked the free soap, a small balcony, 2 tv’s, a gaming system and overall, that you should not be dissuaded by my review above. Despite the foregoing, he jumped for joy when he saw the Grand Stateroom.

One oddity is the large number of clerks in the lobby but they almost never open the door for you. They just stand there and chat with each other. I can’t figure out what their job was. Nina at the front desk was great.

Also, the maid service was inconsistent. The first day, they hadn’t come by 4 pm, then when I called, they did show up and basically just switched out the towels, didn’t even make the bed. They might have had trouble understanding due to lack of English. The next day they did fine, except they threw away some plastic bags I had hidden in the cabinet for later use, then another day they did fine and also turned down the bed and put 2 mints there. We don’t really care about mints but I had to laugh and wonder if it was weekly mint night.
