“Early Birds and Seafood”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2013

No question that Black Salt is a solid 4 or 5 star restaurant in the Palisades area of D.C.
(near Georgetown). We arrived for our early bird reservation on a Saturday night after driving about 20 minutes from our hotel near the Capitol. Parking is available on the street with 2-hour limit meters so bring some quarters with you. We walked in and had to maneuver ourselves through a wind screen of green curtains which protected the workers at the fish counter. This is a nice seafood market with an attractive display of fresh seafood ready for cash and carry or to eat in. Then we passed through the raw bar which was filled with happy oyster men and women eating their briny bivalves.

The next room was a casual eatery with bare top wooden tables. We walked further and finally reached our destination in the back dining room which had white tablecloths and a nice quiet atmosphere. There we dined on salads, shrimp cocktails and glorious fresh fish and vegetables. We had the whole Bronzino times three and one crusted cod. All four entrees were excellent as were the vegetables that accompanied them. You could tell by our empty plates that we liked what we ordered.

The service was excellent and so was the dessert - key lime pie with blueberry sauce - yum, yum! We had tea and coffee to top off the dinner and paid our check. Let me warn you that your credit card will melt a bit from the total of the meal but you will realize you dined near Georgetown and had an excellent meal.

The restroom was clean and well stocked -one of the nicer ones I've visited. I highly recommend Black Salt Fish Market and Restaurant for an excellent seafood meal.

“Excellent Food, Excellent Service.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013

This might be my new favorite restaurant in DC. This was one of the best meals I have had in DC. The staff was friendly and seamless in their service. The food was fresh, carefully prepared and so delicious.

It is a fish market - I had expected a fishy atmosphere, but this was very far from the truth. We sat in a dining area that was adjacent to the kitchen (separated by very quiet soji-style glass doors). We could see the passion and care the chefs took in preparing each meal through the doors. The menu was fresh and had a good variety of fish and a few other items that would appeal to the non-fish eater. Our waiter was knowledgable and gave us advice about the size of the portions.

Black Salt has a well stocked bar and wine "cellar". The waiter was knowledgable about the wine on hand and how they paired with the menu. There are three very distinct dining areas, so make sure you indicate when making your reservation what type of atmosphere you prefer.

Finally, eat desert. The chocolate cake was amazing and so was the keylime pie!

My only warning is to leave yourself a few minutes to find parking! It is in a neighborhood and parking is at a premium. I did not see a valet the night we enjoyed our meal there.

“Love this place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2013

I've eaten here several times and have never been disappointed. The oysters are always excellent. I usually get one of the fish specials - so, so good. Great service too. Wish I lived closer so I could go more often.

“We Love Eating At The Bar”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2013

Black Salt is a great reataurant, but for us we love eating at the bar and enjoying the bar menu. Happy hour is from 4 - 7 pm everyday. So saddle up to the bar and have some great drinks and calamari, orysters, or mussels.

“Good for the neighborhood”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

This is one of the Black family's group of popular Washington-Maryland restaurants. This visit was our third or fourth since it opened. Unlike its fervent fans, we again found the food competent, but hardly to die for. The reservations, however, finally seem to be handled better. Once past the fish market at the entrance and the crowded bar table scene, the sit-down restaurant is appealing and orderly. We were pleased to have our request for a quiet spot honored--we were given a corner booth in the way back which was perfect for a hard-of-hearing guest. The service was similarly attentive and courteous. A tuna tartare appetizer--touted by friends and reviewers as outstanding--seemed a bit off, so while the chef said it was fine but may have been seasoned differently than we expected, it was whisked off the bill without a murmur. The oyster selection was impressive and delicious. The rest of what we had was fresh and well prepared: New England chowder; barramundi appetizers; scallops; mussels. The drinks side of the tab edged a wee bit higher than we thought was warranted. Like too many places, the non-alcoholic options were limited, with the "beer" on offer unacceptable. Although, nothing made us urgently plan a return visit, for people living in the surrounding in-town residential area it's certainly an asset..
