“Good value, dated decor - depends what you're seeking”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2014

Three nights for a conference half a mile away... Nice area, must walk .4 mi to any stores, cafes, or restaurant, or Metro stop. Great price for area. Nice staff. Dated decor, inside and outside of rooms. No coffee maker or hot water maker in room. Few outlets. Little fridge. Ancient blinds and semi-sheer curtains. Quiet. Breakfast pastries & coffee free. Folks on a budget may like this place a lot - don't need a car, either. Folks used to chain business hotels will find decor, smell, amenities wanting. The Normandy a block away is much nicer in decor but substantially pricier. The diversity of ratings here (some high, some low) reflect, I'm guessing, the expectations. High ratings appreciate a safe decent place for low rates. Low ratings are probably comparing to a Holiday Inn or other, and not factoring in the rates.

Room Tip: Ask for back of hotel or west side for quieter sleeping.

I booked this hotel because it was the only one I could find at a reasonable cost near my conference. The location was great (walkable to Dupont Circle and Woodley Park metro stops) but overall the hotel was sub-par.

When I entered the hotel room, there was a musty smell and the carpet was clearly aged and dingy. Despite that I would describe the room as moderately clean overall.

Some challenges with my room:
- The shower handle was reversed, i.e. the red area was cold and the blue area was hot.
- There was no apparent in room temperature control. I could only turn the radiator on or off. Windows were exceedingly difficult to open.
- Continental breakfast included no fruit or protein.
- Room cleaning was minimal. A cup of coffee I left in the morning was still waiting for me when I returned that evening.

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. When the subject of the water handles were brought to my attention it was taken care of right after your check out. As for the heating system, we would hope that this review will let other potential guests know that all they have to do is ask. There is a thermostat on the wall (sometimes not near the radiator) and then the fan strength is controlled within the radiator. Also, I have mentioned to our housekeepers that if they see a cup of coffee left in the room to check if the cup is warm and if not, discard it. I feel that it is not that they did not clean well. It is that they were being cautious not to throw something away that a guest may want.

My hotel for stays in Washington DC, downtown: Just a few steps off Connecticut Avenue but quiet, situated a short walk North from Dupont Circles, many restaurants at Dupont and Kalorama Circles nearby. Behind the hotel, the Embassy Quarter begins, with beautiful streets and houses.
The three-story hotel is old-style U.S. and you have to like this style, otherwise you will not be friends - the rooms are a bit run down, the windows are sticky, the closet is an open wardrobe…..
The breakfast is also very frugal, a few seats at folding tables, a large selection of bagels with Philadelphia, cereals and thinnest coffee in large quantities on self-service.
The reception people are very friendly and guests are recognized .
To me, the place has a lot of charm despite the shortcomings - a welcome alternative to all the boring, standardized chain hotels even if objectively price versus performance is certainly sub-optimal!

We thank you so much for your kind review. Your input has given me the opportunity to bring up seating for breakfast. Sometimes in the rush and crowd, a lot of our guest's don't notice the sign just over the coffee. It says that there is additional seating in the vending area. Its just a few steps down the hall and that way our guest's will be more comfortable. We really appreciate guests such as you who look at the positive side of things. We do our best to make everyone happy and that's what your review has made us.

We recently spent 2 nights at the Windsor Park. The hotel is in a very nice area and within walking distance to several reasonably priced restaurants. We caught the bus from NY and it dropped us off at DuPont Circle and the hotel is only about a 15 minute walk. Our room was very spacious with a separate living area. Everything was clean and the room was quiet. Breakfast was better than lots of other hotels we had stayed at. They had fresh fruit! If you like walking as we do you can walk to all the famous sights from the hotel. The other plus about the room was you could open the windows and let fresh air in.

Reading the extremes in some of the reviews gave me second thoughts about staying here. The past 2 weeks I had been staying in a 3+ star hotel near Union Station. When rates doubled after Labor day I needed to find More reasonably priced lodging. Windsor hotel came up in bookng.com so i tried it. Yes the place is dated, musty and small in scale but well worth the price. My 3+ star hotel didn't provide a continental breakfast nor a refrigerator nor free wifi and only had a few tv channels. It did have gym which the Windsor doesn't. But then the 10 minute walk to the metro provides exercise. Nice neighborhood and plenty of restaurants to chose from. Since I will be staying in the dc area for a few months I would have liked a better long stay lodging rate. I address that next week.

I have just arrived at the Windsor Park and am surprised by the negativity expressed by some previous reviewers. It is great value for money, very well situated (a few minutes from Connecticut Avenue), everything seems to work and there is free internet access (laptop and desk top). If the critics want something better then there are a lot of other hotels in the area - but at a much higher price of course.

Your response is greatey appreciated. We have always felt that those who have the most negative responses are those that did not research our hotel and find out all the facts about us. We have a very in depth website which describes the age of the building and there are many photos of all areas of the hotel. You are obviously well traveled and have experienced all aspects of the lodging industry. Thank you
