Description: Oyamel combines Mexico's rich regional diversity with the modern urban atmosphere of Mexico City. The liveliness of the dining room is matched by the creativity of the menu and cocktail list, featuring antojitos-Mexican small plates-ceviches and tacos, plus unique margaritas, and an impressive array of wines and tequilas. Originally opened in 2004 in the Crystal City neighborhood of Arlington, Oyamel moved to its current home in the Penn Quarter in March of 2007.

Good food, but service could improve. It's also very loud! Must try the shrimp in tequila, the tacos, and flank steak. I would have stayed longer if the margaritas didn't cost $10!

“a great meal!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2008

We decided to try this restaurant on the spur of the moment and were not disappointed. We were a little worried when we walked in at 6:30 on a Thursday without a reservation, and the hostess looked a little skeptical at first. But, then, with a little smile she miraculously took us to a table immediately. We absolutely enjoyed every bite. Our waitress, Ivana, was very helpful in navigating the menu (small plates: lots of options), and she made some good suggestions. We had fantastic shrimp and crab ceviche, several different types of tacos (we were disappointed that the grasshopper ones weren't available, though), cactus leaves, and really wonderful quacamole made at our table. The salsa that came with the chips was also really amazing --smoky from chipotle chilis, I think. The bill, with two margaritas and two Dos Equis came to $89. Quite reasonable for the amount and quality of food. And you could certainly eat cheaper if you wanted to.
Added bonus: As we were nearing the end of our meal, B.J.Novak, the actor who plays Ryan on "The Office," came in and sat down near us!
The only thing about the experience that might be a problem, was that the service was pretty slow. We weren't in a hurry at all, so it didn't bother us, and our waitress was great in every other way. But if you have a limited amount of time, you might want to think twice.
