“Boring. . .don't waste your money”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2010

Our tour was the Saturday morning Embassy Row tour. Beware, because this tour is about socialites and not embassies. We stood for 20 minutes in the same spot in front of a vacant house being renovated while the tour guide droned on and on about another house around the corner, read from a guide book, and showed poor quality b&w photos. A tourist in the group, who was also a tour guide, provided more helpful info than our tour guide. We passed by several embassies, but our tour guide didn't even point them out. Even though she was concentrating on these socialite houses, she could have pointed out some of the other sights along the way. But she seemed ignorant of everything except the spiel that she had learned (with the aide of a guide book). The tour hiked up and down the same street while she searched for houses and thumbed through her guide book. We had planned to take this company's evening ghost tour, but after this disastrous Embassy Row tour, we took the Washington DC Ghost Tour instead and it was great! Don't waste your money with Washington Walks.

“Great Tour. (Unfortunately ours got cut short - bad lightning)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2009

We decided to do this tour to get a good lay of the land. We were staying at the Willard Intercontinental and this tour hit all the major spots. The website describes the tour perfectly. Unfortunately we got some drizzle during our tour, and then while at the Lincoln Monument big flashes of lightning started so the tour had to be cut about half an hour short. We did not get to go to the Vietnam or WWII Memorials, or Washington Monument due to the lightning. This by no means reflects poorly on our guide. She talked about these two sites from the Lincoln Memorial. We just went back to these sites on our own later during our trip.

The tour starts at the Jefferson Memorial. Cost is $15 and I think it was worth the cost. You purchase online ahead of time, but there is really no need, unless you have to use a credit card. There are not a set number of people for this tour. The three hour tour includes FDR memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Veteran's Memorial, and the World War II memorial, and a few other sites along the way. Our guild did a fantastic job of giving information about each memorial in a way that was of interest to everyone.

I would recommend this tour as a nice way to spend three hours in the evening getting acquainted with the city. Yes, you can walk all of these things on your own, but why! You would not have as much information provided and would have to look at a map to navigate rather than just having a good time.

“Monuments by Moonlight - A great walking tour for the whole family!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2008

This was the year that my husband's whole family, plus a few friends made the pilgrimage to Washington DC so that all the grandkids could learn about our nations heritage. I found the Washington Walks website and suggested the "Monuments by Moonlight" walking tour. The in-laws were skeptical - it seemed silly to pay $15 per person to see monuments that are readily available for free. But they're very nice people and they willingly agreed to go along when I said, "I know my kids and I will get more out of a guided walk than we will if we just go and stand in front of a memorial and try to think profound thoughts." The youngest member of our group was 11, the oldest was 70.

The guide stands at the base of the Jefferson Memorial a bit before the start of the tour (6PM, in our case) and collects cash payment for the tour. You can prepurchase your tour online if you need to pay with a credit card. Once that was done, we began a three hour walking tour that included the FDR memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Veteran's Memorial, and the World War II memorial. Our guild (Paul) did a fantastic job of giving information about each memorial in a way that was of interest to everyone. He included a lot of details like the controversies surrounding the monuments, construction information, significant events that occured in those locations, etc.

Everyone felt like they had enough time at each of the monuments and the 3 hours was filled completely. No one got bored and my in-laws (who have been to the monuments numerous times) said that they learned things they'd never known before. The kids thought it was great. Everyone agreed that it was money well spent.

Another plus was that touring the monuments from 6PM - 9PM left the early part of the day for touring Smithsonian museums and we were not out at the monuments in the heat of the day.

You probably walk a total of 3 or 4 miles in the three hours and, although it isn't in long stretches, it is on concrete. Our feet were tired at the end of the evening.

I highly recommend the "Monuments by Moonlight" walking tour. Because of the quality of this tour, I'll certainly look at other tours by "Washington Walks" if I return to Washington DC in the future.
