“Nice urban B and B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2010

Since finding urban B and Bs in Washington, D.C. I don't have the desire to go to regular hotels again for either business or vacations. Akwaaba is one of the ones I like in the DC area. It is old style in a nice building in a great location. Some would find the room I had to be small but it was just for one person and there are larger ones in the facility. The breakfasts are great and quick if you need to run to meetings or more leisurely if you just want to chat with other guests. Being between Dupont Circle and U Street means that it is a simple walk to lots of interesting restaurants, clubs, bars, and the metro. I have stayed here twice now and will continue to look to it as one of my top options when visiting DC

I just stayed at this lovely B and B and highly recommend it. Great location near Dupont Circle, beautiful house with big, nicely decorated rooms, and all the amenities, including free wifi. The host is attentive, but not intrusive, and very welcoming. and a very reasonable price- much better than most hotels in the city.

What a wonderful place in DC. This was my first stay at Akwaaba DC (I've stayed at Akwaaba Brooklyn before), and enjoyed all of it. The Langston Hughes room was HUGE and beautifully decorated. The breakfast was delicious and plentiful. Kristen was perfect company at the breakfast table. After having a stay in such a great place, I don't know why people choose sterile, big box hotels in DC. I hope to be back!

We stayed at Akwaab for 4 nights. Loved every minute of it. Kristen is a great innkeeper - and makes a lovely breakfast - challah french toast with fresh poached pears, veggie frittatas, etc. On most nights we skipped dinner and enjoyed the happy hour hors d'oeuvres and wine.

Comfortable bed, quality linens and a quiet room. The literary theme is an added bonus. I read a Toni Morrison book while there. Close to everything. We walked to Adams Morgan, Convention Center, even Georgetown.

The big plus at Akwaaba was the terrific skill and warmth of hostess/ manager Kristin: her delightful breakfasts, attentiveness to guests, gracious manner, and most of all sense of fun and humor added up to a positive comfortable easy stay.

Does that not say it all? Akwaaba was a wonderful find for my friend (colleague) and myself that afforded a great location, wonderful accomodations and a friendly and caring staff. The breakfast was great, but the coffee could be a bit stronger for our taste. I would try and book a room for any visit where an Akwaaba B&B is located.
Cheers

I've lived in DC for most of my life but stayed at Akwaaba on 16th St. in NW, DC recently and felt like I was in another time and place. I was truly on vacation the two nights I spent there, SIMPLY AMAZING!! It took me a while to really get comfortable because it felt like I was sitting in the middle of a work of art. The owner, Monique Greenwood, and really captured the essence of each writer honored with rooms in this delightful B&B. I stayed in the Zora Neale Hurston suite and briefly visited the Langston Hughes suite and it was as if Zora & Langston actually decorated the rooms. I took pictures of the room at 3AM and posted them to my Facebook page immediately. Kristin, the innkeeper, Kes and Monique made me and my mother feel like we were long lost relative that finally found their way home. The food was excellent, the decor was fabulous, the atmosphere is timeless. It is my new goal to visit each Akwaaba at least once. One word describes this place...UNFORGETTABLE.
