Owner description: Known as the "Cradle of the Emancipation Proclamation". The Cottage is where Lincoln lived with his family at the height of the Civil War. The Cottage is located on a picturesque hilltop in Northwest Washington, DC. Opened to the public for the first time in 2008 after being restored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the Cottage is the only designated National Monument in DC and the only National Monument in the country that is operated by a non-profit. Guided tours of the Cottage focus on Lincoln's ideas and offer visitors an intimate view of Abraham Lincoln’s presidency and private life. Visitors are also invited to browse exhibits in the adjacent Robert H. Smith Visitor Education Center. Tickets are required for entry to the Cottage, and advanced ticket purchase is strongly recommended. Weekend tours often sell out completely.

“Off the beaten path”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

We had never heard of Lincoln's Cottage until we started planning a short trip to DC. It is off the beaten path, but well worth the time and effort to visit. Our tour guide, Beth, was very interesting and well-informed. The site is so peaceful and lovely and it is easy to see why President and Mrs. Lincoln would want to escape the White House and spend time at this retreat. A great way to spend time in DC and learn more about President Lincoln.

“Very interesting place for short outing in DC”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2013

The Lincoln Cottage on the grounds of the Soldier's Home was Lincoln's summer residence for most of his time in Washington. He is reported to have written the Emancipation Proclamation there. It is fully restored and presents an interesting and fairly personal interpretive program and tour. Nice setting with visitor's center and gift shop and tour seemed to work well for elementary / middle school children .

“Lincoln's retreat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2013

The docent was passionate about her subject and setting. The cottage is bare and stark but still you could feel the man and his families presences. Hopefully with the help of contributions the proper furniture will be found and displayed. The security is a bit excessive and restrictive. Also more signage from the metro would be helpful. Otherwise worthwhile trip

“Get to know Lincoln better”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

This summer retreat of the Presidents was a very pleasant surprise, and much more interesting than anticipated, thanks to the very knowledgeable, ebullient staff who was directing the tour. Don`t go expecting to see a lot of memorabilia, but the information more than makes up for it, and you can top it off by taking your picture outside, next to a statue of Lincoln standing by his horse.

“Perspective is everythimg”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2013 via mobile

I went with my husband and two teenagers. The guide was able to intrigue both teens about lincolns plight to keep the country together, appease the south, and still keep with his own values. The conversation he began was invaluable to my family. It truly opened their eyes. The house is sparse and simple. Make sure your taxi driver knows the area.
