“Great historical site, off the beaten path!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2012

Close in proximity to Eastern Market, it is a bit of a hidden gem. Since it was one of the first things established in the area, we learned the actual land was never touched by a bulldozer; all intact since the beginning.

The grounds are lovely and probably nice to just walk anytime. But, we got a lot out of our tour with Steve Hammond, who does the monthly Civil War tour. Due to all the figures we heard about connected to the Lincoln assassination - I wish I had done the Ford's Theatre museum right before to be reminded of the people! But, so many interesting stories! And wonderful to see Sousa, Hoover, others too.

“Congressional Cemetery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2012

This cemetery has been around since 1807. It is not spectacular like the Supreme Court; however, it is an interesting NON-COMMERCIAL, nearby location within the District of Columbia, not frequented by crowds. Approximately 55,000 rest here, some of them Members of Congress (MC), military and government officials. wives and a number of ordinary citizens. There are a number of cenotaphs (empty graves) for MC’s who lie elsewhere.

The Association for the Preservation of Historic Congressional Cemetery maintains the cemetery. The Cemetery is owned by Christ Church, 620 G Street, S.E., Washington, D.C. The Association is a “non-profit 501 (c)(3) corporation,” and has a long-term lease to operate all aspects of the cemetery operations. I cannot provide the web address for the cemetery as www.traveladvisor.com incorrectly thinks both the church and Association are commercial operations. However, if you SEARCH, on line, for “congressional cemetery,” you might find the Association web site with more information and detailed directions.
The cemetery is not as large as Arlington National cemetery. Apparently there was an era when it was not well maintained but this is not the case today.

You can find an individual with the "Search" box on the right side, as you enter. You can hear audio stories and read bios of some of our famous "residents" in the walking tour section, and see our efforts in stone and vault preservation.

Be careful where you step as dog owners walk dogs there in the afternoons.

“Great historical site!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2008

This renovated cemetery is the final resting place to many well known people as well as many just as influential lesser know people. It has been renovated through the funds generated from turning it into a dog park. Owners by passes to bring their pooches into the cemetery, and the proceeds have fixed the place up. Grab a map on the way in and start exploring!
