“Not just the Smithsonian Portraits Gallery!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2012

Much, much more is here to be seen and not all of it can be taken in with a single day of viewing. The building's size, like the National Gallery of Art, is misleading and it is very big. Several floors of pictures, paintings, sculptures and many other art forms are here.

“Nice evening at the Museum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2012 via mobile

Some works in the museum were more interesting to me than others because of my personal taste in art. I will have to say though that some pieces were beautiful and incredible to me.

“early evening culture”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

I loved this place...or actually places since it is two museums. excellent collections and the civil war show really brought some incredible pieces...the big bierstadt and the 4 giant church's were the most dramatic beginning of an art exhibition I have ever seen. it is in a building right in the center of downtown and is open until 7pm which makes it easy to visit early evening and once again it is free

“Civil War exhibition was fantastic. Two Museums in One with National Portrait Gallery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2012

What makes it worth the visit, is that you get two in one museums in one trip. This museum shares the building with the National Portrait Gallery. I did find the American Art Museum better than the National Portrait Gallery. The best exhibit (surprising to me), was on the American Art side of the building – the Civil War exhibition was gorgeous. This museum is not on Smithsonian row with the other museums and is about a 10-15 walk to get there from the other museums. Another good thing, because of its locations, the museum is less crowded that the other museums in DC. The landscape portraits in this museum, more than some of the other Smithsonian museums were beautiful. Another great thing is you are able to take non flash photos of the paintings (in most of the areas) so we have some great memories.

“Current exhibit - "The Civil War"”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

A collection of paintings and photo's of the Civil War collected from museums around the country. Lots of Winslow Homer's paintings.
The art itself it not as impressive as other exhibitions, it it the story told by the picture, which are well documented in the side notes and they tell a story many may not have heard before.

Worth the trip and the rest of the museum has some wonderful stuff.
