“Excellent hotel. Exceeded my expectations!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2013

We just returned yesterday from a week long vacation at the Residence Inn in DC. My husband and 3 young kids (11, 8 & 4) were with me. We are avid travelers and normally always rent a condo or home when we travel to ensure we have enough space. However, this isn't feasible in DC so we went for the one bedroom suite here. When we arrived, I was immediately impressed with the front desk's friendliness and professionalism.

As we entered our suite, it felt clean, new and well cared for. They provided coffee, microwave popcorn, feather pillows (on request) and a small kitchenette. The beds were very comfortable. I was nervous that which ever of my kids got "stuck" on the sofa bed would be complaining all week. However, the mattress was actually quite comfy (no springs) and the kids fought over sleeping out there. There was a tv in each room. Cleaning service was very good. Also, it was VERY sound-proof in the room (no traffic outside or other hotel patrons) so we had no problems at night putting the kids to bed early.

The biggest pleasant surprise was when we were informed that, in addition to the free buffet breakfast, they provided dinner Mon-Wed evenings. It is a small menu and 2 of the days we were there it was hot dogs, macaroni salad, green salad, cookies, etc. so we opted to skip it. However, one day was a delicious dinner of ham, mashed potatoes/gravy, salad, green beans, etc. This unexpected benefit easily saved us $45-50 for dinner. In addition, when we chose to have dinner delivered on the nights we didn't want the hot dogs, we still got the kids milks/soda, desserts, hot chocolate, etc. from the free buffet. This still saved us some money.

The breakfast was very good. I expected junky food, as normal in most hotels. This breakfast had unsweetened oatmeal (with mix-ins offered), eggs, ham, potatoes, fresh fruit (not just apples and bananas) but melon and pineapple and other healthy options, as well as the standard sugary cereals, bagels, waffle maker (my son's favorite). They also had tons of add-ons for the eggs and waffles. It felt like they went way above and beyond for a free breakfast.

The service during the meals and housekeeping was very friendly and professional. They were always smiling, helping elderly customers get their food, and were more than happy to go get me additional milks or bring us extra sheets/towels. We didn't encounter one negative employee all week.

Finally, I must acknowledge the one major drawback which is not the fault of the restaurant. The location. While it is very close to the metro (5 min walk) and the Mall, there is only one pizza place next door and nothing else around. It's a business area so on holidays and weekends, it's all closed. We had to ask the front desk for delivery menus since the hotel restaurant doesn't have a dinner option except Mon-Wed (the free meal). The kids were always so tired by the end of the day and there is very little food options on the Mall once the museums are closed. Our choices were to get on the Metro to Chinatown or Union Station OR head back to the hotel (where we all really wanted to go) and get something delivered. That's what we did but it was a little bit of a pain. We also could have bought food and cooked in the small kitchen but there wasn't a grocery store super close by, either. We knew of this issue when we booked this hotel so it wasn't a surprise but it was a pain with tired, young kids.

I was actually surprised at the lack of restaurants in many neighborhoods around the Mall. We had a hard time finding lunch when we were doing the memorials (war and Lincoln memorials) on Saturday. You really just have to ask around since all the bldgs are closed on Sat and there are not restaurants easily visible. In the museums, we just at there for lunch but they are closed by dinner time. All the food we ate was pretty good but not easy to find in some neighborhoods. I felt like we spent a lot of time planning how to find food when not in a museum.

All in all, I was very impressed with this clean, pleasant hotel and all the benefits it included. My kids loved the free hot chocolate every night and my hubby loved the wine from the market store in the lobby. And I loved a week with no cooking, cleaning, comfy beds and huge, free breakfasts!

The thing that impressed us was the great customer service at this Residence Inn. Agustus at the front desk is very professional and helped us select a comfortable room that was perfect (we got a spacious corner room that overlooked the Capitol). Though we were told that the room was in the corner of the hotel that is above the railroad tracks, and sometimes you can hear a light hum as the train passes by, we decided to select the room. The train did not bother us at all and we slept just fine. The room was also very clean and odor free. Parking can be limited in the underground lot but we always found a spot. All the employees here were exceptionally polite and helpful and every morning we were cheerfully greeted by the breakfast staff. The hotel was busy and they were working very hard to accommodate everyone. The breakfast spread had a lot of options including healthier offerings such as prepared oats, fruit, yogurt, etc.. The location is within walking distance to a lot of things including the Smithsonian. We would stay here again.

This property is close to two metro stops and less than 5 minutes from the Metro Center SW stop and about 10 minutes from the other. The hotel is not more than a 10-15 minute walk to the Mall and the Capitol. The room had a separate bedroom, bath and living/dining area with two televisions. The is very nice when traveling with two children. The closet and vanity were large which was nice since we stayed 5 nights. Other reviews have mentioned noise from the train but our room was facing the track on the eleventh floor and the noise was not a major problem but was present. The breakfast was a nice amenity but on the weekend it is extremely busy so be prepared for that. I suffer through the chaos of the free breakfast because it is included with your room rate and it is quick and convenient. The ladies who work to clean and re-supply the breakfast buffets are true gems. We did experience a shortage of hot water a couple of times while at the property but the front desk was generous and the hot water was plentiful the remainder of the trip. Overall a good home base for touring the many sights in DC.

Room Tip: I think some rooms have a capitol view so you might ask for that or specify a high or quiet room.

We stayed for a week and what a wonderful value. Large room and breakfast buffet was great! Even had supper three nights a week which we opted for one night. Close to the metro and cab stand. Pizza place next door is also yummy. For block walk to the grocery store. Not too many restaurants around but everything else makes up for it. Would highly recommend for families and couples looking for value.

My family (Mum, Dad and two girls - 9 and 11) stayed 6 nights at the Residence Inn Washington. What i was amazed about was the value for money. We had a large room with a separate parents bedroom with our own TV. A full kitchen is provided. There's a buffet breakfast daily included in the tariff. We also appreciated the good gym and heated indoor pool. The location is close to the National Mall and its famous museums (nr the Capitol end of the Mall) and to a Metro station (half a block away). Our only issue with the location is there's few eating options nearby. A reasonable Pizza place next door but not much else. The Hotel's located in the midst of an office area of town. There's a Safeway a few blocks walk which is great to stock up the kitchen. The staff are freindly and helpful. The free business centre is pretty basic but perfect for us to print tickets to a couple of shows we booked while we were in town. Highly recommend this hotel. People have mentioned the trains. We didn't find them an issue. We were on the 6th floor. I suspect the higher up you are the less noise you'll hear.

Room Tip: If you are worried about the noise of passing trains get a room on the higher floor or away from the...

My husband and I chose this hotel because of its proximity to Capital Hill, and it's also a reasonable walk to the Mall. The staff could not have been more courteous and welcoming. The rooms are spacious and well equipped if one has a longer stay or is cost-conscious about going to DC restaurants. The room included a microwave, fridge, dishwasher, coffee maker, dishes and utensils. It would be an excellent choice for families, especially because breakfast is included. I was also surprised that a dinnertime meal was also offered 3 nights a week.

Stayed 4 nights with the family after Xmas. The location is ideal for visiting the museums along the Mall as well as the Capitol, all within walking distance. We had a room facing the street, so we did not have to deal with the train noise others have described. The hotel was busy, and there were lines for breakfast and elevators if you arrived later in the morning, but if you went early there was no issue. The staff was friendly and efficient, especially given the crowds. We opted not to park in the hotel lot based upon the reviews ($30 a night and no guarantee of a spot), but since we were not driving during the day, we opted to park in one of the private lots around the hotel (about $13 a day, closing at 7 pm), and then parking on the street at night.
