“good food, staff could be better trained”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013

Enjoyed eating here with a party of 8. Wine recommended by our waiter was good and we had 2 bottles. Appetizers at our table included a salad consisting of beets which was very interesting. The service had large pauses and we had about a 10 minute wait for water after we were seated. The bread was white and whole wheat pita. Only olive oil was served with the bread. The entrees were served and were scattered to the wrong diners. They were clueless as to who the food belonged to. When the proper plates were finally set, the food was good. Only one plate went back to the kitchen--lamb chops cooked well done instead of medium. Dessert was good especially the greek yougart cheesecake and the baklava.

Overall the food was good; however, service was slow but that was good as we were not rushed.

“would return again and again”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013

As previous reviews state, this is not your "usual" Greek restaurant. Too often Greek restaurants have the same old, same old dishes and that can get old. Greece has many, many different regions and Mouraya seems to have gathered some of the most unique recipes and then given them a little twist.
The food and wine pairings were superb. The staff was extremely professional and attentive.
And for the DC area, I think the pricing was very reasonable.
Seriously looking forward to our next trip to DC, I'll make sure we stay near Dupont Circle so we won't need to walk too far!

“Consistent with recent good reviews”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 10, 2013

Went here with 10 people, while at a weeklong meeting at the nearby Hilton Hotel. This was the highest rated trip advisor restaurant within a few block radius, that took reservations. Our expectations were for an upscale Greek restaurant, with attentive and good service, a good selection of Greek inspired dishes, at a reasonable price. Our expectations were met and the recent reviews were right on the money.

This is not, by a longshot, the best restaurant I've ever been. But it is also not typical Greek, tavern, peasant food. These were nicely prepared thoughtful and interesting Greek inspired dishes. I would highly recommend this as a very worthwhile restaurant to visit if you're staying at the nearby Hilton Hotel.

That said, at the time of this writing, the TA number 18 rating out of 1400+ restaurants seems a bit overrated in this city of great restaurants.

“Grecque Unique in Washington DC”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2013

Dupont Circle is a must-visit spot when you visit DC, but most of its many restaurants are merely adequate. Mourayo is a standout for its style and warmth - also because the wait staff are well-trained, no-nonsense professionals; there is none of that I'm-just-waiting-tables-until-something-real-happens attitude.

The food is well prepared and presented in artful and interesting ways. It's apparently cooked to order, but it comes quickly enough from the kitchen. The menu offers seafood as well as pork and lamb, but it also accommodates vegetarians very nicely.

I usually avoid commenting that a restaurant is "clean" because that seems so condescending, but Mourayo's somewhat stark, European-style decor is more or less dependent upon and enhanced by its cleanliness. And I've got to say that the lady's rest room may be the most pristine in town.

“Upscale Greek dining in Washington, DC”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013

My friend and I arrived early, just shortly after this restaurant opened on a cold blustery spring day. It was too cold to spend our time checking out too many nearby restaurants and, although we both enjoy Italian food, we welcomed a change from the many, many Italian restaurants nearby. A quick look at the menu hinted at a modern twist to traditional Greek fare, and we were intrigued. We were not disappointed. The restaurant's name apparently means "safe harbor" and the cosy inside was decorated to give the impression inside of a ship. Given the maritime theme, I had the karouropita to start with, a delicious savory crabmeat and cheese filled pastry. I then followed this with the vatrachopsaro “Plaki” (monkfish), which wasn't much to look at but very tasty, and my companion had the porkloin medallions with figs, almonds, cheese and a honey sauce, which she was very pleased with. Since I wasn't familiar with Greek wines, and the wine list was extensive, our waiter gave us excellent pairing suggestions.
