Very decent version of an Irish Pub, American style. With Guinness and Kilkenny on tap, shepherds pie, fish & chips, bangers and mash, all that was missing was a bit more of a rustic décor and a small 3-piece band in the corner singing old Irish folk songs that make you wish you were in Ireland!
The food was good - tried the shepherds pie and fish & chips (yes, on two separate visits). Although the pie would have been much better with ground lamb instead of beef. The fish was good and not overly greasy. Portions were large for a lunchtime meal, but have another Kilkenny and you won't mind at all.
The bartenders were friendly - considering how busy it got around the noon hour. Although, if you want a table, get there before noon - not 5 til...more like 15 til. Sit at the bar and you can chat with the local suits and the bartender and watch the big TV overhead at the same time.
Murphy's is a stones throw from the Woodley Park Zoo Metro Station and 1 block from the massive Washington Marriott Wardman Park hotel and conference center. About 1-1/2 miles north of the Capitol Mall/Smithsonian area, its a very short Metro ride if you're looking to get out of town for a bite to eat and/or a good beer or two.
Prices were reasonable considering the location. I always look for the local Irish Pub on my travels and this was one to keep in mind the next time I'm in DC.
