“Excellent; but Could be Great”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

My wife and I tried this established Georgetown destination for our wedding anniversary in part because so many other fine restaurants are dark on Mondays. It turned out to be an excellent choice, but with a few improvements it could have been great. Our primary waiter was outstanding – he knew the the restaurant’s history, the menu, and wines, and he gave us wonderful, personalized service. But the busboy and other staff were hovering which made us constantly aware of them. Similarly, the food was generally a hit, especially the starters (try the brussel sprout salad – it’s not what you’d think from the description, and is extremely tasty). But the lamb shoulder was slightly overcooked and just the slightest bit gamey. Overall, the restaurant is indeed excellent, but could be great with just a better balance between tasty, creative food and their “whole animal”, “sustainable” philosophy, and some less intrusive wait staff. Still, if you’re in Georgetown, 1789 is well worth a visit.

“Elegant dining experience.”

Elegant special occasion dining experience. Very nice décor, wait staff and delicious food. Very expensive but was really worth it for those special occasions.

“Overrated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013 via mobile

Some business partners asked for a cosy place to have dinner... We went there because it looked cosy to us... Food is good but not spectacular. Nice athmosphere and friendly staff. It could be even better with an improved menu. And less pretentious air... But real.

“Beautiful from start to finish”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

Celebrated our anniversary here and from the moment we stepped inside the restaurant, we were treated special. They wished us a happy anniversary and even the waiter and his staff knew it was a special occasion and our Menu was printed with "happy 24th anniversary" on the bottom. The menu was impressive with choices to please any palate. I had the Brussels Sprout salad, which was a home run, and my husband had the celery root soup, while not his favorite, it was very good. My pork tenderloin was delicious and flavorful, husbands duck was an unexpected twist on the usual duck breast. Many delicious desserts to choose from as well as cheese plates. What really made the evening great, was our server tended to us like we were the only ones in the restaurant and was so pleasant and personable, we will request him if we go back. Excellent, excellent, excellent.

“Nearly Perfect in Every Way”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013

This is a favorite place and I go with my wife every year on her birthday. Service is impeccable, without being pretentious or intrusive. The menu choices are uniformly excellent (understatement!!) and the meals are creative without being trendy. I can't think of any way that it could be a better special occasion venue or just a great night out.

They have recently relaxed their dress code and do not require men to wear a jacket. I still think the place merits wearing a jacket.
