“Excellent Food, Great Service, Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2013 via mobile

This restaurant is in the Penn Quarter section of DC. It is close to everything - the Mall and museums, the Verizon Center and the Shakespeare Theater. I've been to this restaurant several times, most recently before a play. We told the server that we had tickets, and he ensured that we were done with dinner in time for the curtain. The food is consistently excellent, if not very inventive. My husband had a risotto appetizer that he loved. He had a steak dish which was perfectly cooked. I had chicken which was also very good. For dessert, my husband had a banana cream pie that was very tasty. The service is great - very attentive without being overly so. It's a little on the expensive side, but pricing is consistent with other high-end restaurants in DC.

“Fantastic staff, food, location and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2013

We found the 701 just after the lunch hour between tours of the museums on the Mall. We were seated immediately on the patio which overlooks Navy Memorial square.

Our waiter, Javier, was attentive, highly knowledgeable about the menu, the downtown area as well as alternative areas to explore. He recommended taking some time to visit the Virginia wineries when we grew tired of the crowds chasing the Cherry Trees around the basin and tramping around museums. He said it would provide a welcome (and rewarding) relief. It did.

We had a wonderful Rose' that complemented our choices of a Cobb salad and a Shrimp salad. We started the meal with Sunchoke Soup (with the choke provided by artichokes). It was a delicious, served at a perfect temperature. We finished the meal with Espressos that rivaled the best we had in Europe.

“Just outstanding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013

What a pleasant and tasty experience - the staff was outstandingly friendly, the atmosphere great, the decor very mod. The food was exquisite, and the cocktails are worthy a special mention. What made it a great evening was the staff. When we decided not to have dessert, they told us to just relax and enjoy the music and our wine, and then brought us a dessert sampler!! When I asked the waiter for a cab, he was waiting at the curb with the cab holding the door open by the time I came outside the restaurant. Highly recommend it.

“Noisy and Ovwrrated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013 via mobile

Like sitting inside a kettle drum. Sommelier in response to a suggestion for a Cote du Rhone (choice was limited) immediately directed me to the $155 bottle. I lived in France for ten years. This is nothing more than the old school hustle. Food was banal. And our ears are still ringing from the noise.

“Stuffy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

Pretty much what you'd expect in a restaurant along Pennn Ave. Very old school DC - from the prices to the okay food. But, the location is really convenient.
