how can you not go to this long time local favorite, and imagine the days when U street was something else entirely. Plus it is yummy!
great food cheap and great place to people watch- now you can eat this food at the Nats Baseball park
I lived about four blocks from here for nine years and U Street is awesome - take the metro if you don't want to deal with parking (or park further east down near 8th St). Great little shops (like 4NXC and Caramel), great restaurants (Ben's Chili Bowl is an obvious choice, but for some great Ethopian in a simple atmosphere, try Zenebech Injera). Great vibe, easy access, lots of things to learn historically - plan to spend a few hours here (at least!)

If you like a bunch of 20 somethings running around like its the prom, this is your place, frankly, I wish more of these people would go there and leave the other areas alone.
