“Rather Disappointed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2007

This is the second time we have stayed here. I keep being disappointed. We love the Mandarin, but the DC Mandarin is just not there. Our room was annoying. The closet was half size; the bath was European style in terms of the shower, the tv was on the side, and did not work that well. Even though we were hotel guests we could not get spa bookings, or CityZen bookings, and we made our reservation in advance.

I may return, but I'm not that happy with the place.

We stayed at the Mandarin Oriental during the later part of December. It's a beautiful hotel, with outstanding service, very nice furnishings, and excellent food. One of the big attractions for us was the spa, which was very relaxing and had a great atmosphere.

The one minor drawback for us was the lack of public transportation in the immediate vicinity; you have to walk about 10-15 minutes through some fairly sterile and long city blocks to get to the Smithsonian, and there were no other restaurants or shops very close to the hotel. Cabs, however, were plentiful.

I stayed here for my girlfriend's Chrsitmas party - pretty posh for a company Christmas party. The room was very well decorated and the highest marks for the room go to the bed and bathroom. Some have views others look into an office building (ours). The bathroom was quite nice (although not as welcoming/homey as it oculd have been). The lobby bar was wonderful (although like everything at the Manderain quite expensive) with outstanding jazz music.
I'd reccommend the hotel on the company's expense account, but not for the average traveler. The location is 50-50 ... walking distance to the mall and Smithsonians, BUT surrounded by absolutely nothing but office buildings. Nothing in immidiate area at all. With that change this would be a top DC hotel.

The rooms are nicely decorated and of decent size but the location is isolated.Only good if you are doing business nearby and are on an expense account. You can not walk anywhere.
The two restaurants are nice-the only reason people seem to come here.
When we departed the hotel one night there were no cabs waiting outside. After waiting around for 10 minutes none of the doormen seemed interested in helping us get a cab.Perhaps they were pre-occupied with the one car that had pulled up.
The lobby is not that nice.Underwhelming and dark.Doesnt compare to other Mandarins such as the one in Miami.

after reading other reviews of this hotel we were a little concerned of how far away it was from everything....but as we arrived it was clear that it was just the opposite! you can walk to every smithsonian museum from the hotel, to every monument and with the metro (about two or three blocks away) you can go everywhere!
the hotel is beautiful, the crew is so nice and the way they make your stay so confortable and special is out of the question.
the only thing we didn´t like was the breakfast buffet, and this because they served the same thing every single day! it wasn´t about the taste, but about the lack of variety from day to day.
we walked from and to the hotel at different hours, and yes, it gets a little lonely after 9pm on weekends, but it is very well illuminated and you can see the sidewalks on both sides of the street as you walk, so if you´re not in the mood of a cab, you can walk. there are no other restaurants arround, so we recommend that you eat out! since the prices at the hotels restaurants are so over the top, and washington DC has so many restaurants to offer!

This a beautiful, 5-star hotel. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. The bathrooms are really cool with huge bathtubs. The breakfast buffet ($19) was also amazing.

I usually make it a point to go over reviews for the hotels that I will be staying at on TripAdvisor just to get a feel for where I am going and what people have stayed there prior to my own have to say about it. Since they were pretty mixed (and options on the SW corner were limited), I took a shot and booked it at the Mandarin because it was close to quite a few of the local attractions as well as where I would be working. If it wasn't on the government's dollar, I would have canceled my reservation and re-booked it elsewhere. The marble bathroom of the 2 bed suite was well-appointed, but everything else--- from the stained carpet, shoddy drapes and washed-out bed sheets --- were so worn and of poor quality, I couldn't imagine why anyone would want to pay $300 + to stay here. I definately believe this hotel should be re-rated from the ground up, as it severely lacks the luster of a true four or five star hotel.
