“Not up to it's brand .”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

This hotel does not the expectations that come with the Mandarin Oriental brand. From the minute you arrive you feel that it is dated and in need of TLC. Fortunately most of the staff members i came in contact with were warm and efficient professionals, despite the hotels overall shortcomings. Food quality especially was quite disappointing. Updating of the room product is sorely needed: old entertainment system , no option for coffee or tea in the rooms or suites, no electronic checkout, minibar was not serviced during my 4 night stay. Spa and gym are quite nice.

Great professional staff, nice comfortable beds, very upscale. Quiet on the weekends which is great if you're looking for a nice escape.

From the front desk to the car valet, everything was top notch.

We decided to have a "staycation" in Washington DC to celebrate our fifth year anniversary of the day we met. We spent two nights at the Mandarin Oriental and it exceeded our expectations.

We had a corner room from which we could see part of the Tidal Basin and the top of the Jefferson Memorial. The bathroom was incredible with a romantic corner tub, separate shower, and lots of beautiful white marble. The room was so soundproof that we did not hear traffic outside -- just the occasional train which we didn't mind; it was not loud.

I had brought a wrapped gift which I wanted housekeeping to put on the bed after making up the room. I called to make that request and also asked if it would be possible to do anything extra if they had time. We were so surprised and delighted when we walked back into the room late that night -- they had not only placed the gift in the requested location, but they also left a box of chocolates, a tray of chocolate covered strawberries with a confectionery "Happy Anniversary" and a dramatic, tall, beautiful white orchid. The next day, when I inquired about purchasing the orchid, they told me to just take it home. I think about our stay at the Mandarin Oriental every day when I look at it.

We ate breakfast in their restaurant the last morning we were there. The service was superb.

This is a great place if you want excellent service. When we were there over Labor Day, it seemed to have a soothing, serene atmosphere which might not be the case during busier times. This is no doubt a business oriented hotel, but for local couples who want a peaceful staycation during a time when the hotel might not be filled with lobbyists and business people, I would recommend it. It is a bit of a distance from restaurants (other than their own restaurant) but very doable by taxis or even walking.

Room Tip: Probably the higher the floor the better -- get a corner room so you can see the Tidal Basin and the...

Wonderful hotel! We stayed here for 8 days to tour D.C., and couldn't have been more pleased. The staff was wonderful, very responsive and welcoming. Excellent location, close to the mall and monuments. Had a view of the Potomac and could see Marine 1 coming and going from the White House!

Visited this property in July. It was the first trip to DC for our kids. Overall impression was great - property is well maintained and staff are friendly and helpful. Location is close to the mall and museums.

We got 2 connecting rooms and they were spacious and roomy. We had a view of the Washington Memorial which was lit up at night. Rooms were well appointed - comfy beds, big bathrooms and flat screen TV's with lots of channels. Only negative were the carpets in our rooms, they were very worn and not in line with how clean and well maintained the rest of the rooms were.

Empress Lounge had great atmosphere, pretty good food/drink selection and good service.

Sou'wester was a disappointment. Food was ok and service was not good. We brought drinks into dinner from the Empress Lounge and the server was irritated by that. She grew increasingly irritated when she asked us multiple times if we wanted more wine/drinks and we did not. She promised our kids coloring books and did not bring them. Her attitude was so bad we wanted dinner to be over asap. We did appreciate that the hotel was aware of our child's food allergies and they brought a few treats especially for her.

My kids adored the panda bears they were given at check-in.

Gym was spacious with lots of cardio machines. The weight machines were ok - good enough for a hotel gym.

The only other negative for this hotel is there isn't free wi-fi for guests - truly a negative for such a prestigious brand.
