“Would be a 5 if it had pancakes!!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 12, 2013

My wife and I spent the 4th of July weekend in DC and stayed @ the Monaco. This is a excellent hotel with a lot of character. I read some posts that said not to stay in the basement, so we requested the 4th floor. When we got there we were in the basement. I thought our weekend would be ruined, but it was great. It was nice and quiet and I have absolutely no complaints. The staff was very attentive and assisted us in finding sites to visit.

Pros: Great location to metro stops and the National Mall; lots of restaurants near by; you can get a $5 drink voucher if you decide not to have your room made up!!

Cons: No pancakes for breakfast!

We definitely loved the hotel and would go back.

Andre G - that's a lot to hang on pancakes. Though I think there are many great breakfast treats in Poste - I hear you - everyone loves a good pancake - I'm going to lobby Chef Marron on your behalf - wish me luck! We hope to see you again soon.
Cheers

Great hotel ~ great location! We arrived at 9am on our check-in day and they let us check-in with no hassle. We were on the 2nd floor (the 1st floor is the basement). Clean, comfortable, rooms with robes and they sent up a bottle of champagne when they found out it was our anniversary. Free wine and beer from 5-6 every day in the lobby. A high-end boutique hotel with a modest price in a great location ~ nothing better than that! :)
The front desk people were so friendly and helpful, especially Tony who sent us to the best Chinese restaurant in Chinatown (3 blocks away).
There's a cup cake bakery around the corner called Red Velvet. You simply have to try their signature red velvet cup cakes!
Metro station across the street from the front entrance, cabs on the block, 4 or 5 blocks to the National Mall - simply a great location!
We will definitely come back when we return to DC.

Room Tip: Request a room on the 2nd floor or higher

Green Features: Hang up towels you don't mind using more than once! :)

We stayed at the Monaco in DC this past 4th of July weekend (Thurs-Sun) and though everything went smoothly during our time there, I have to say we were a bit disappointed. This was our second time staying at a Kimpton property (last stay was at Hotel Monaco in Baltimore) and our expectations were very high. The building itself, on the inside and out, is awesome and decorated beautifully. The lobby was of course very elaborate and luxurious though it was a little dark. Lots of space to sit including a little "living room" with a television. Easy access to the restaurant as well. We had a little bit of trouble at check-in and the man at the front desk (though I can't remember his name - sorry!) was very patient and helped to lighten the mood. It was after we got into the room that the disappointment set in. Probably due to the historical aspect of the building, the room was much smaller than we had anticipated, had a strange layout, and the view was just awful. Both windows looked directly out into a small alley as we were only on the second floor. Though we realize not everyone can score the great view every time they travel, it put a major damper on our excitement. The bathroom much more "standard" than I would have expected for this property; no large walk-in shower with glass doors - just a plain old bath tub & shower like in a boardwalk motel. The vanity was nice, though, with granite countertops and a pretty mirror. Really liked how they provide q-tips and cotton balls in case you forget them! Last complaint about the bathroom - the toilet was so loud when you flushed it! This really became disturbing at night when one of us was trying to sleep. Aside from the size, the view, & the bathroom, the room was nice. The only thing I noticed about the room itself was that the paint was a chipping a bit in some places, and the carper appeared to be coming up a little - minor details. The room was clean and tidy. Large, grand windows as expected, and a huge headboard atop our king bed. Instead of a built-in closet they had an armoire, which housed the robes, hangers, extra blankets, mini bar, safe, and stereo (weird). The statue of on top added a cute touch to remind us where we were! (see pictures) The bed was comfortable and the sheets soft and cozy as expected which we greatly appreciated. A/C worked well and kept us cool in the 90 degree heat wave which swept through while we were there! The hotel location is as good as it gets in DC. Close to many restaurants, coffee shops, and the metro. 5-10 minute walk to the National Mall and other attractions. There is a CVS right around the corner which was so convenient to get drinks, snacks, etc. $10 toward the mini bar is always a great perk of being an In-Touch Member. Overall a good stay at another Kimpton Property, but I think I would like to try another hotel next time I travel to DC - we'll see!

Room Tip: Ask for a good view!

Green Features: Loved the options to reuse towels or skip housekeeping all together and earn a $5 voucher towards the restaurant or room service, and the opportunity to separate recyclables from trash is great!

Well KNM2014,
I see you are very thorough - and it seems like you enjoyed so much about our little corner of DC! I truly hope you come back to see us and when you do - enjoy a Monte Carlo room - big extra space, small extra charge! I do truly appreciate the comments, and the stay - be it us or a sister Kimpton we'd love to have you back again,
Cheers

Stayed at the Hotel Monaco during the July 4th holiday. The hotel is very convenient to most of the points of interest in Washington. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The only negative is that our room was quite small.

Hi R_Galyean821 what a great time for some "fireworks" for two. Make sure you look into our Monte Carlo guestrooms next trip - they'll allow you a extra little personal space (but still remain cozy!)
Hope to see you back soon.
Cheers

We booked Monaco online in advance of our stay but only 2 days ahead - on Hotels.com We felt as if we were the best customers of the hotel! Our short stay was upgraded by room size at check in, easily and warmly welcomed by the valet attendants, maps, directions, and restaurant suggestions easily made by the front desk - all in a wonderful environment. Our room was quiet, cool and clean (an inside room on 200 level). So much to do in DC so we asked to keep our luggage at the hotel for the day - and didn't return until 7:30pm without concern. Their hospitality goes beyond most hotels (and we have frequented many!) and seems to be led by a fabulous front desk manager, Debbie. She was amazing from check in through check out. No questions faze her and she's determined to be sure your stay is as comfortable as possible!! Her experience shows. But, ALL the staff were attentive, helpful and earnest to assist. There is nothing I can identify to correct/change with our stay except for the smallest detail that the bathroom fan may need adjustment as there didn't seem to be good exhaust for the steam when showering. A minor detail. This stay suggests to us that we'd absolutely look for future stays with Kimpton hotels. Thank you Debbie (and staff) for making this a fabulous getaway weekend over the 4th for us!

Room Tip: We thought our room (250) was great and offered all amenities. (quiet/no view)

Dear Travelin1Pa -
Wow! We couldn't agree more - Debbie is top notch and we're thrilled to have her on the team - though we appreciate your recognition of the whole crew! No higher praise can be had than the idea that we've instilled a little "Kimpton love" that will encourage you to seek out our sister hotels - an idea I highly recommend! In the mean time, come back and see us again soon!
Cheers,

Having lived in DC for 5 years before moving to NYC a few years ago, it is still weird for me to stay in a hotel when visiting. This time, I came for a romantic weekend getaway and we decided to stay in Chinatown since all of the metro lines were conveniently located to everywhere we wanted to go during our stay. This boutique hotel did not disappoint. Before we even arrived, Kali reached out to me to see if there was anything special they could do to make this weekend getaway even more romantic. She generously upgraded us to one of the suites and provided us with a sweet welcome card upon check-in to the room along with a bottle of champagne and cupcakes since our train came in after wine hour! What an awesome surprise! The hotel was so unique and different than most other hotels and built off the DC/Political charm of the area. The restaurant in the hotel had great food although we only grabbed an afternoon bite. We ended up going to Old Town in Alexandria for the day and by the time we realized we were going to miss wine hour again during our second night, we happened to walk right in front of the Hotel Monaco in Old Town. We asked the front desk person if it was okay to go to wine hour there instead and after verifying our stay at the one in DC, she happily welcomed us! Another great surprise! The only drawback for me personally is that it is a dog friendly hotel, which I am allergic to and also not the biggest fan of the dog fights/barking in the lobby, but I can deal with it because the hotel is so nice! Will definitely be choosing Kimpton hotels for my future stays nationwide.

Best hotel by far in the Gallery Place area. Friendly staff. Kimpton amenities. Building was once a Post Office so avoid rooms in the basement. Afternoon hosted happy hour is a nice touch. Excellent restaurant and room service menu.
