“Loved the hotel... HATED the hard beds”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2012

My husband and I recently stayed a night at the Monaco Hotel. It is a beautiful hotel. We loved the old and new feeling. The rooms were small but fine.. it is a city hotel so we knew it would be on the small side.
The staff was very nice, and helpful. The hotel is in walking distance to the mall, and the bus and metro system is basically across the street.
The only bad part of the hotel is the beds. I thought they were super hard, my husband said they were not too bad... but in the morning he changed his mind.
I am not sure if i would stay here again because of that.... I would probably stay somewhere else.
But if you are a fan of super firm mattresses this is your place!

Good Morning AdriTheTraveler,

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us here at the Monaco. Being an historic building, the idea of blending the old with the new can be challenge, I’m glad to see that you appreciated that. I know that beds are a real personal preference to most and I can certainly understand this can be a deal breaker when choosing a place to stay, I hope based on your positive experience with our staff and the great location we are in, you would give us another shot.

We look forward to having you back the next time you are in our Nation’s Capital!

Safe Travels!

We love visiting Washington, DC and don't know why we have never stayed here! We found this hotel via TripAdvisor and stayed here for two nights in July. It was a comfortable hotel with great service. The location was great - we walked to our event at the Verizon Center and walked to many spots nearby. We did take the Metro for one of our sightseeing excursions and the stop was very convenient to the hotel. From now on we will always stay at Hotel Monaco on our trips to DC.

I've stayed at this Kimpton a number of times. As with all Kimptons, it's an old building that has been restored and converted into an interesting property. This is one of their most unique, I think. It's an old post office building in a huge square configuration with an open central courtyard -- solid white marble structure, typical of DC admin buildings and reminiscent of Paris. In fact, the glass-enclosed portion of the restaurant in the Courtyard, "Poste", reminds me very much of the pyramid at the Louvre. The rooms on the second floor (same level as the entrance) have a standard hotel footprint square footage, but ceilings are at least 14 feet high! The bathroom is in an enclosed box with a lower ceiling, so there's a big potential space between the top of the bathroom and the high ceiling in the room. Very quirky and interesting, IMHO. Service was mostly tops -- extraordinarily friendly front desk staff; accomodating and helpful with reservations, etc. One glitch in the whole visit: we were awoken at 8am on Sunday with a knock on the door delivering room service that we didn't order. After getting back to sleep, we actually got a phone call to confirm the delivery. The front desk staff comped us a can of cashews for the inconvenience when we checked out. Anyway, the rest of the visit was fantastic, as usual. I'm a huge Kimpton fan.

Room Tip: Request a 200 level room. They're actually 1/2 floor above the street and have amazingly high c...

Good morning erdocmdca,

Thanks for taking the time to review your stay with us here at the Monaco, you are correct that the hotel was an old Post Office, in fact it was the original home of the US Postal Service dating back to 1840’s, rumor has it that Thomas Jefferson even had an office here, pretty cool stuff?

I’m happy to hear to read that you found the front desk staff extraordinary and it seems that you liked the quirkiness of the guest rooms as well. The knock on the door and follow up call is something that we have discussed and I appreciate the fact this will not keep you away from us in the future.

We look forward to seeing you again the next time you are in our Nation’s Capital!

Safe travels!

We booked this hotel many months in advance. When we at three pm pn a friday we were greeted by very young staff who seemed to struggle with our booking. At one point I asked if they had our reservation. We were told they were trying to "upgrade" us as there was a wedding booked for the saturday. We were given room 401 which sounded good given it was a corner unit. It was not an upgrade. In fact it was smaller then most rooms and had no where to sit unless you include the bench at the end of the bed or the toilet! Not impressed for a "high end boutique hotel". We immediately asked to be moved at least to a room as shown on the website. They agreed to move us the next day to the 2nd floor (street level) in a handicapped room. The staff did not mention this was a handi cap room when they were changing over the room. The room was the proper size but did not appeal given it was outfitted for handicap instead of regular use. We had to ask for towels twice as I guess the room was dressed for one instead of two guests. The person who moved our stuff didn't bring it all and we only got it the following day after calling twice???

They give you a gold fish in your room if you asked. We did upon check in but one was not sent. No big deal. When we changed rooms we asked again and received one that was sick. I guess it was better then the one in our friends room that was dead when they returned from dinner.

If you can get past the poorly trained staff the common areas were interesting. Neat foyer and very nice outdoor center court yard which we tried to have after dinner cocktails at. They still served us but staff didn't know enough to bring in or shelter the furniture cushions from the rain earlier in the day so everything was soaked.

Free beer and wine cocktail hour was a nice touch. Staff were generous and the compliments were nice.

All in all this would be a good choice when the chain provides more training and consistency to their offering as it was definitely not the standard we are used to at a boutique hotel.

Good morning OffTheBeatenPath,

Thanks for taking the time to give us an honest review of your stay with us here at the Monaco; it is obvious we did not live up to your expectations.

I have to agree that its seems that we really dropped the ball on a few key points with your reservation and in trying to make up for it with a complimentary upgrade, we might have made it worse, I believe the front desk agent truly was trying to wow you with a nicer room. Unfortunately things did not get much better on the second day with trying to accommodate you again with a room change, I am embarrassed that we had somehow forgotten to move all of your luggage, not something that we hear very often or if at all.

It is encouraging that even with the issue you encountered you still were able to find kind and positive words to express about the Hotel Monaco; we do hope that you will give us another opportunity to show we are so much better than what you experienced.

We look forward to seeing you again the next time you are in our Nation’s Capital!

Safe travels!

Love this place. Used to live in DC, and always wanted to stay here. Finally had a chance when I came back into town recently for a wedding.

This building has history; it is the old Post Office HQ from what I can remember. You can tell walking the long, wide halls that it used to be a government building. The rooms reflect it, as well.

Check-in was a breeze. Poste Brasserie, one of my favorite restaurants and bars in the city, did not disappoint. Had folks over for drinks two of the three nights I was in town.

It is right in the middle of everything, yet the moment you step inside it is a welcome sanctuary.

I am always impressed with Kimpton hotels, and this was no exception.

Good afternoon molly12qw,

Wow thanks for this awesome review of the Monaco; I am so glad that you finally got the opportunity to step inside of history! You are correct, this was the originally home of the US Postal Service in the 1840’s.

We could not agree more that we truly are situated in the best location in DC. Looks like you have found a new home here in DC.

We look forward to seeing you again the next time you are in our Nation’s Capital!

Great Staff, Location, Rooms and Price. Do yourself a favor and find the best rate you can for the room size you need, then book the Hotel Monaco. Two blocks from everything you want to see and across the street from the Metro. Can't say enough about Kimpton quality and the Hotel Monaco staff!

Room Tip: Had a third floor corner room and did not hear a thing outside..

Good afternoon dirk6460,

Thanks for taking the time to review your stay here at the Monaco, this was awesome to read.

I could not be happier to hear how great our team is, the fact that your room was what you expected and the price too! I have said it many times before; we truly feel that we do have the best location in the city, as you said, “two blocks to everything” that really sums it up!

My husband and I have stayed at the Hotel Monaco in DC now 4 or 5 times. We always come in to DC for a quick weekend getaway and if we can, we try to stay here. The hotel is located in a great area, there is always something to do or see. The hotel has great charm and ambiance as soon as you walk in the door. The restaurant, Poste, has an incredible bar, we love trying all the creative cocktails. If you're not in the mood for a cocktail, there is also a wine happy hour in the lobby. The rooms are all very unique and lovely. We've never had a bad one! One our last visit, there was a coffee bar set up in the lobby on the morning of our departure. An added bonus, was iced coffee, complete with ice, and cups with lids and straws. It's the little touches like this that will keep up coming back time after time.

Good afternoon wincva,

Thanks for taking the time to review your stay here at the Monaco; it’s always great to hear when we have guests who feel as if they are home when they walk through the front door.

It’s amazing to think that this was the original home of the US Postal Service circa 1840’s and today is still full of great charm and ambiance. I am glad that you have enjoyed the different layout s of the guestrooms and more importantly the fact that you’ve never had a bad one!

Keep checking back as Poste will be launching its new Fall menu in the next few weeks and
I’m sure it will be tasty.

We look forward to seeing you again the next time you are in our Nation’s Capital!

Safe travels!
