“Great Food Inattentive Service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

This is a neighborhood Belgian bistro with truly great food. We had the Lobster Bisque, the Escargots, the Beef Stew and the Salmon Filet. We fully agreed that the Beef Stew and Salmon were the best we had ever had. One caution - the Belgian preparation of these dishes is somewhat different from the French. For example the Escargot is made with onion rather garlic. Also, the service is in the true European model – inattentive. So be prepared for a great meal but be ready to tackle your waiter to get some service.

“Service with an attitude (bad)”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2012

We selected this restaurant while walking along MacArthur blvd, a member of our group had eaten there when it was an Italian restaurant. We walked in and there were 3-4 other tables in use but the host seemed very upset that we did not have a reservation as he seated us at one of the many vacant tables. After a long wait with no service, we elected to leave so can't report on the food but certainly can't recommend the service.

“Some Good and Some not So Good”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2012

We were given a gift certificate to this restaurant and were looking forward to a nice meal. There were some good aspects to it and some not so good:
Not so good: Slow service, pricey wine list that differed significantly from that posted online and with only one white from California. My wife's fries were cold. The lobster bisque was thin with little lobster. The bread pudding was a cake and heavy toward its end. The place was very noisey when it filled up.
Good: The salmomn was excellent and the stake was good. The creme brule was okay.

Overall, we would would not visit again

“If you're mussel hunting, look no further”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2012

Although it's weak on service from time to time, the food doesn't disappoint and the wine list is decent. The varieties of mussels are fun and tasty and there are plenty of other treats such as sausage varieties and great sides. Worth a stop. Well priced.

“Good Belgian food in the Palisades”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2012

Sur La Place seems to be a nice neighborhood restaurant on Macarthur Boulevard, well outside downtown DC. There is no subway nearby, so you have to rely on the bus or a car to get there. My partner and I had dinner there on a Sunday night, so there were few people in the restaurant. It took a while for us to get menus and water, but the young lady took our order efficiently. However, our soups (I decided on the vegetable and my partner ordered the lobster bisque) and my partner's peach beer arrived later than I expected. Our main course (boar sausage with red cabbage and carbonade flammande with some of the best frites I have ever tasted) arrived rather slowly, and getting the check after the meal took some doing. Et Voilà,the other Belgian restaurant across the street, serves great food, too, but it is much too salty and the portions are small. Sur La Place's servings are much larger; my partner remarked that his carbonade, which he has eaten at both restaurants, was much better here, wasn't as salty, and the frites here were superior. My sausage was very juicy and the red cabbage had a hint of sweetness coming from the port wine reduction. Our first experience here was good, but don't come here expecting a quick meal because you won't get it. You will get well-prepared food but the service needs a little help.
