“A Bit Disappointed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2013

We have stayed in Homewood Suites in seven cities in the United States. We have always had a nice experience and have become loyal Hilton Honors members. We learned at the Washington DC hotel (Massachusetts Avenue NW) that Homewood is a franchise operation, run by individual owners and is therefore not as consistent in quality as we had once thought. The Washington DC “branch” is in an older structure so it lacks many of the amenities of the refurbished, modernized ones. Usually we find that the charm of older buildings makes up for the lack of certain creature comforts. This is not true here. The owners have cut costs by omitting many of the little niceties that we have come to associate with Homewood. The bottle water and “cookies” that welcome Honors’ travelers at check-in is not offered here. The fruit-infused water canister that is always in the lobbies of other Homewoods is absent here. The room furnishings are showing signs of wear and frequent repairs. One very annoying problem was that the sheets appeared to be designed for a regular king bed and the mattress had been replaced with a more plush deep model. The bottom sheet no longer fits securely over the corners of the bed. Within hours, we both awakened to find that the top of the fitted sheets had worked loose and were wadded under us. We asked about it at the front desk and were told by an irritated counter person that they would “handle it”. Sadly, the same problem occurred every night for our five night stay. The mattress is very soft and comfortable but the elastic band of fitted sheets is just too shallow for the mattress. You roll over once and the corner is loose and springs free. On the positive side, the breakfast and evening meals were simple and good, comparing favorably to other Homewoods. The wait staff in the dining area was attentive and polite. The hotel is located within blocks of many fine dining establishments and is four blocks from a Metro station (which is the only way to get around Baltimore).

Thanks so much for taking the time to share the details of your stay--I really do appreciate your feedback and your loyalty to Homewood Suites. I'm glad you enjoyed our complimentary F&B offerings and that you took advantage of our wonderful location. The Metro is indeed a great way to get around DC, and we are conveniently located near the Orange and Blue lines.

I'm sorry you encountered some disappointments, though. I frequently learn things from my guests, and I will most definitely look into the ill-fitting sheets you described. We do sell sleep afterall, and I'm sorry you weren't able to have a restful night. As a matter of clarification, I would like to speak to the cookies and water that are offered to Hilton Honors members at all Hilton brands. This is a benefit for members whose points qualify them to be Gold and Diamond members. The point system changed this year, and many Hilton Honors members find that their status has changed. After doing some research, I found that you have a Silver member profile, and that may be where the confusion lies with the amenities.

I apologize again for the inconvenience you encountered while you were our guest and I'm doubly sorry it wasn't resolved properly. I would encourage future guests to bring an issue to the attention of a manager if something is not quickly addressed to their satisfaction (which it should be). Thank you again for being our guest and for sharing your comments.

I stayed at this hotel at end of August on a work trip. It is in a wonderful location off Thomas Circle. It is a bit hard to find since it sits on a small street above Massachusetts Avenue, but a taxi driver should find it easily; just be forewarned if you are driving, you might miss the little road as you circle around Thomas Circle. The hotel seems to have been recently renovated in both the lobby and the rooms. The rooms are in the typical Homewood Suites style with a small kitchen, decent sized living room and a separate bedroom. The hotel is well suited for families. The hotel has a free breakfast with lots of options, and like all Homewood Suites, has a nightly light dinner Monday through Thursday. It is about a 10 minute walk to the McPherson Square Metro station, about 15 minutes to the White House and Dupont Circle. There are a variety of very good restaurants right up 14th Street. There is a CVS on the other side of Thomas Circle and a Whole Foods Market up on P Street. In addition, the staff could not be any better here.

Thanks so much for taking the time to write a review--your comments are appreciated! You make an excellent point about the location of the hotel. While the address is 1475 Massachusetts Ave., NW, a GPS might require that you enter 1475 Highland Terrace, NW. The hotel sits slightly above Mass Ave, and you are correct in that most of the taxi drivers are familiar with it.

The 14th Street corridor is one of the hottest dining neighborhoods in the city right now, and Homewood Suites is situated steps from dozens of fabulous restaurant options there. Our location truly is fantastic, whether you're traveling for business or pleasure. Glad you were able to take advantage of that!

Thanks again...hope you'll choose Homewood Suites on your next trip to DC!

We stayed at this Homewood Suites over the Labor Day weekend and we're so glad we did! The location is great and within walking distance of so many of the things to see in downtown DC. Unlike other hotels in the area, the Homewood Suites offers a full complimentary breakfast and they even have a light evening meal. The valet parking rates are also more reasonable than other hotels in the same area. The Assistant General Manager Tulu was so nice. He went the extra mile to make us feel welcome. In fact, due to a family emergency, we ended up arriving at the hotel one day late and even though we opted for the advance purchase rate, the Assistant General Manager was kind enough to lengthen our stay by 1 night since we were unable to arrive on the first night. If it was any other hotel, they would have just charged us for that first night and said that there was nothing else they could do especially because it was Labor Day weekend and the hotel was completely booked! Would definitely stay here again!

Hello, and thank you for your review. I'm so glad we were able to accommodate your change in plans...we're just as happy as you are when we can help with changes that allow guests to better enjoy their time with us! And Ermeyas Tulu is especially good at that.

It sounds like you took advantage of our excellent location while you saw the city--our hotel is very centrally located for sightseeing, nightlife or business needs. We hope to have you back with us soon!

Enjoyed my 6-night stay here during the first week of September. Good choice and quality for the inclusive breakfast, although I didn't try the evening meal. Spacious, clean rooms and instant hot water. The staff were friendly, professional and helpful (especially Mohammed, who was great). Just a 15 or so minute walk down to the White House and many of the free museums are a hop, skip and a jump from there. My only quibble would be that the sofa and armchair in the sitting room have seen better days and could do with being updated but the bed was fine. Also, a safe in the room would be nice (although you can access one in reception at no charge). If I ever return to Washington DC, I'll stay here again.

Thanks for your review, and your nice comments about the hotel! We like taking care of our guests, and I'm always pleased when I hear that it's reflected in our service.

Earlier this year I let everyone know that we were expecting the first round of sleep sofas to be replaced in the Fall, and I'm happy to report that they've arrived at the warehouse and are scheduled to be delivered by the end of September...finally! The chairs you mentioned are being reupholstered in small batches, and we've done all but two floors at this point. Additional improvements are coming before the end of 2013!

Thanks for sharing your comments, and we hope to have you back with us soon!

This is a great little hotel and we are so glad that we spent a week here. It is clean and the staff are friendly and attentive. The breakfast is pretty good considering it is complimentary (eggs and meat, choice of cereal and yogurt, whole fruit, toast, pastries, waffles and juice and coffee). We only had the dinner twice since I have health issues and have to be careful what I eat. Tonight we had roast chicken, beans, salad and wild rice. it was tasty, free and convenient. There is a laundry room which is open 24 hours (thank goodness) and certainly came in handy. The suite is spacious and we enjoyed our comfortable bed. A word on location - two blocks from a wholefoods supermarket (comes in handy when you want a healthy hot meal and fruit etc) and about three blocks to the metro. The best way to see this city is to use the Metro and to use the big bus companies that you can hop on and off (for how many days you pay to use this service for - would recommend for a city tour don't use for Smithsonian as you can use the Metro which is much cheaper). The suite is not close to the attractions (you can't really walk to any of them except the White House) but this city is so huge that the attractions are spread out all over the place anyway - which is why I recommend the bus companies and the Metro. Overall a GREAT stay. We have two young children and staying here just made our lives EASY.

Thanks so much for pointing out all of our family-friendly features in your wonderful review! Convenience can make or break a vacation, especially when you're traveling with family. In addition to making things easy, our complimentary meals make for an excellent value.

I love when our guests pass along their tips for getting around in the city, so thanks for passing along yours. Some of our guests do walk to the Mall area and Smithsonian museums, but others find it a bit long, especially with children. As you pointed out, there are many options, so there's a way around for everyone.

Thanks again for sharing your feedback!
