My wife, two sons (11 & 13) and I stayed here for a 3 night trip. I had a few criteria for choosing a hotel in DC: close to downtown, safe neighborhood, & an indoor pool for the kids. My other choice was the Hampton Inn DC Downtown Convention Center, but I'm very happy I chose the Hilton Garden Inn (Downtown).
Valet parking is $35/night. We knew this when we booked, and it seemed about the going rate for DC hotels in this neighborhood.
The hotel is directly across from the McPherson Square Metro station. We used the metro every day. Easy to use, maps easy to understand. There is also a 5 Guys right next to Metro entrance. A Cosi, a Subway and a fro-yo place are all w/in 1 block. A CVS is 2 blocks away. Seemed like a very safe neighborhood.
The included breakfast in our rate was fantastic! It included: made to order omelets (or fried eggs); waffles; sausage; bacon; corned beef hash; French toast or pancakes (alternated); cereals; bagels/bread; yogurt (including Greek yogurt); fresh fruit; hot cereal; OJ; hot chocolate; coffee. We ate breakfast there each morning; so convenient & satisfying. A great way to jump off a day of sightseeing. Be sure to get there before 9 a.m. and you won't have to wait for a table -- although the "wait" shouldn't be too long if you do.
They also offered "take-out" urns of coffee and tea in the morning in the lobby next to the restaurant; in the afternoon they put out cookies and water dispensers (with fresh lemon and oranges to flavor).
The room itself was neat and fresh. I believe the hotel was recently renovated top to bottom. We had 2 double beds, sufficient for us. Bathroom was nice. Room on small side, but probably typical for a "standard" room in any big city. We had an interior room on 13th floor that looked out to central area with a/c equipment on ground level -- still, we had plenty of light. Quiet room, and our a/c worked great. My single complaint was that the refrigerator was broken. I reported it on our 2nd day but it was never fixed. I suppose I could have followed up again, but never did. They did bring up more towels when I requested them. Housekeeping was very good.
Staff was helpful, and we were granted a "late" 2pm checkout on our last day, which allowed us to do a few last things in the morning.
Hotel is w/in comfortable walking distance to White House, Ford's Theater, Spy Museum, Washington Monument ... we had a great meal at Old Ebbitt Grill (reservations recommended) our first night, and that is w/in easy walking distance as well ... beyond that, we took Metro to US Capitol and also to the Zoo (get off at Cleveland Park station, walk is easier than Woodley Park-Zoo stop). There is a Smithsonian stop for Metro that is very convenient to do some touring along the Mall. We also sprinkled in a few cab rides, which seemed to average $10 + tip for our party of 4.
The pool is in the basement next to the gym; there are also meeting rooms on this level, although we didn't see them in use during the evenings when we hit the pool. Pool is about 30ft x 15ft, no hot tub, 3-5ft deep, poolside outdoor shower available. Towels available as well. It gets VERY loud with even just a few kids in the pool due to tiles & small space. But my kids loved it. We had to ourselves one night, very crowded another night (8 kids?).
In terms of overall value, I'm giving this hotel 4 stars out of 5: Very Good. Room prices in DC are high, just like they would be in NYC. We also stayed in "high" season, so not a lot of deals out there. Seemed like room price was on par with other hotels I looked at. The OTHER Hilton Garden Inn DC/US Capitol was a little cheaper, brand new hotel, and I looked at that one as well ... but it was also much further away from everything. Sometimes you pay for convenience!
Really pleased with this hotel ... would stay again and would recommend to friends and family.
