Was “scammed” by the bartenders twice in the same week. Two different bartenders but same bar. DO NOT hand over your credit card to the bartenders at Molly Malones. Also, DO NOT get involved in a drinking scam with some seemingly nice person at the bar because THEY ARE WORKING FOR THE BAR. They will take your money. It is a scam. It might be a customer or it might be staff, they are all looking to take advantage of you.
Be very cautious because you never know who is there to steal from you. Molly’s is an “industry” bar. For those of you who do not know any better, “industry” means that many of the customers are bartenders or waitresses from other bars. They come to Molly’s to “work” non-industry customers. I personally have been taken twice; but never again. The first time I gave the staff the benefit of the doubt and wrote it off as an honest mistake. The second time it was very clearly a scam.
It was this second time that I walked up to the bar, alone, and out of nowhere two girls (seemingly drunk and fun) arrived to my left and another arrived on my right. On my left, the girls kept telling me they wanted to buy a round of shots … but I already had a drink and was ready to go home; so I declined. They kept asking and I kept declining. Finally I said, sure, go ahead and buy a round of shots. They ordered a round and we all had our shots. About 10 minutes later I asked for my bill and sure enough the shots were on my bill. I talked to the bartender (a slightly overweight latina on a Thursday night) who proceeded to defend the girls. So I went to talk to the girls and “Kate”s reaction was that I was responsible for the drinks. I went back to the bartender and told her that I would not pay for the shot and told her that I wanted to speak to the person in charge. All of a sudden she (the slightly overweight latina) was the person in-charge and all of a sudden she didn’t know “Kate”, “Lee”, or the other girl and that these other girls were now all of a sudden problem customers.
Let’s be honest, you as a customer know as well as I do … this was a set-up from the beginning. The slightly overweight latina girl who was working behind the bar on Thursday (October 18) must be fired and her friends (all of which were part of the scam) must be banned from all the bars on 8th Street. Do not, do not, DO NOT go to Molly’s so long as they are scamming their customers.
Oh wait, you’re probably thinking I am being unrealistic or unfair toward the corporate effort behind Molly’s and about a half-dozen of his other businesses on this street … but I am not. It is a representation of the kind of staff he hires. This was NOT just an unfortunate mistake made by one employee (the slightly overweight latina who was working behind the bar on the evening of Thursday October 18, 2012). This was this second time I was scammed at this restaurant and by a completely different set of staff.
Bottom line, be careful … BE VERY CAREFUL. I got pulled once and almost twice. Don’t make the same mistake. Places like Chesapeake Bay, Lola’s, and Senart’s are all on 8th and all owned by the same guy. He hires people of low integrity … people who you are giving access to your credit card information. Protect your credit card information and give your patronage to someone else on 8th.
