“Wow, so disappointed.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013

With National Geographic having the big reputation they have, I expected so much more. I think most people spend the first couple of days touring the bigger than life Smithsonian museums, like I did, then venture to see the National Geographic museum and probably end up disappointed.

Firstly, we were there on a Thursday, and the 2 films they have don't even play during the weekdays, only on weekends. There are paid displays of pirates you can go to, but as we're not interested pirates or had kids with us, that didn't appeal. Secondly, all they really had was a nice, but rather small, display of 2012 photos that didn't make it into their magazine - hmmm... rejected photos :) That was actually OK, but not worth walking all the way from the National Mall to there just to see a few photos.

Sorry, my recommendation is to not bother going.

“Probably isn't what you think it is”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013

The National Geographic Museum only has two exhibits that are running at any one time. It would be nice if it showed more of a greatest hits throughout the history of National Geographic. The exhibits are well done but they not designed for very small children, I would guess that it would be appropriate for children about 6 or mature 4/5 year olds who could read a bit on their own.

As for the exhibits themselves, they are very well done and tend to be both informative and entertaining. You will learn something about the subject there are presenting and will be done well, it just isn't the type of exhibit that most toddlers are going to enjoy.

“Pirates and More”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2013

My kids love pirates, so much so that my 1st grader who is a 6 year old girl had a Jack Sparrow impersonator at her Birthday Party. The museum has a pirate exhibit which is so more. It has really pirate treasure but also teaches about the reason for pirating and the connections to slavery. Then you walk out of that exhibit into the Birds of Paradise exhibit. This is amazing. Beautiful pictures but also hands on exhibits. You get to make a bird dance. You can learn the dance of another bird. The museum is worth the $7.00 you pay to get in. The staff were very friendly as well. Make this a part of your trip to D.C. and you won't be disappointed.

“They try, but have a hard time living up to the Brand”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2013

National Geographic is a worldwide brand, known for adventure and exploration. Unfortunately the museum is generally fairly stale and pedestrian. they have recently made upgrades, and now charge a fee to attempt to cover some cost, but still cannot meet the expectation of the imagination of the general visitor.

“PHOTO WONDERS”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

After visiting the Old Stone House, a revolutionary era home in Georgetown, we three went to the National Geographic Museum. There were two special exhibits currently--one was Real Pirates and the other Birds of Paradise--that we gladly paid for and enjoyed immensely!! We spent a good 3 hours going through the special exhibits and then went across the courtyard to see the (free) exhibit of some of the incredible photographs that the organization is renowned for! We have always enjoyed this small museum which does change it's exhibits--including the photographic ones!! If you time it correctly, they have special lectures etc that are also offered. I once attended the taping of a radio talk show in the auditorium there. This museum has always been a favorite with the family--and we do enjoy museums! The only reason we departed was we had an appointment with another family member for dinner! The museum shop hads intersting things for sale too!!
