“Best American hostel so far...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2014

I stayed in a hotel for three days avoiding this hostel thanks to the reviews I read, but then I took the risk and realized that I should have just stayed in this hostel the whole time I was in DC. To find a hostel with clean, hot showers with towels provided is a miracle find. Most hostels never have hot water and usually have a 30 second timed shower that you have to keep pushing the button to restart. If you are an American who has never stayed in a hostel before, then you should be aware that most American hostels are not nearly as nice as this one. Then again, it's not a hotel. If you are the type of person who can drop a sandwich on your own kitchen floor and pick it up and eat it, this is the place for you. If that idea disgusts you, you will probably bankrupt yourself staying in five star hotels because you can't handle anything that doesn't suit standards at par with those of the Virgin Mary herself. If you are from Europe, Asia or anywhere else for that matter, this is the cleanest hostel you will find in DC, NYC, San Francisco, Los Angeles.

For any hostel, you should pack ear plugs and an eye mask. People check in late and unzip their bags early in the mornings. There is a common area with cable tv, internet, as well as a kitchen where you can cook, drink beer, and hang out. I'm sure many will complain about the list of rules you have to read, but considering how many different people from around the world stay here, it makes sense that they have to explain TO EVERYONE a few specific rules. DC has people from all over the world living there and driving cars for the first time, for instance, which makes driving in the city horrible. So with such diverse clientele staying here, it's necessary they explain rules to everyone. People from Mexico City, for example, don't flush their toilet paper. The put it in their garbage can. In America, you ONLY flush toilet paper. Don't fault the hostel for pointing this out. It saves them repairs when someone would be tempted to flush their Depends.

The staff are friendly, and I think most complaints about the neighborhood originate from critics who are afraid of black people. Get over it. It's not a black neighborhood. There are just lots of blacks in DC. Slaves settled in DC after the Civil War and made their livings there. Most blacks in DC make more money than most of the people who stay at this hostel ever will, so throw away your American stereotypes of the inner-city black man and walk around like you belong there too. They don't bite. They don't even think about you.

Stayed here for three nights. Noise coming from the third floor made it difficult to sleep at night. My last night was terrible: I was awoken by the receptionist who was standing in the middle of the room assigning beds to three people. This would have been OK with me if it hadn't been at 2:46AM! YES! People were checking in almost at 3 in the morning. That was extremely disrespectful and the first time that happened to me at a hostel. I couldn't get any sleep after that. The only good things about this place were the bathrooms' cleanliness and the pancakes that Nick kindly prepared for us in the morning. Oh, you need to know that you are required to take your bed sheets and pillow and comforter covers when you check out. This is rather uncomfortable when you are checking out early in the morning and can't turn on the lights or make any noise...

Is Ok for a couple of nights, they require to remove your shoes so be prepare to smell feet. The shower head is strong and the hot water work very good make sure to bring some sleepers the shower area is not very clean. Is difficult to sleep before midnight due to people talking loud and snoring. The location is very good bus stop almost in front and the metro station is 4 blocks from DUO housing, also you have a supermarket and restaurants almost next door. You will love the house dog!

This hostel is something a little different!

I quite liked having to leave my shoes by the front door in the p[orch. I couldn't detect a smell of anyones bad fee or shoes and it also kept the hostel clean. It was a mare finding your shoes in the morning though unless you can remember where you left them.
The common area is great! Whilst on our stay in October we watched the tv with a few americans, a canadian, 2 kiwis amongst others. You are allowed to drink up to a certain time ( i think its 12) and if you interact with people as they walk in then they are more likely to sit and chat.

The rooms arent that great and the beds a little squeaky. The pillows arent anything great but i simply put a sweatshirt next/under my pillow and that helped a lot. The bathrooms are easy to get to and clean with plenty of room to move about in. The kitchen on the top floor is small but you could make a meal no problem with ample storage in the fridge and cupboards. The terrace is great especially with the free bbq on a sunday night where there is usually more food than anyone can stomach! The shop next door is ideal even if it smells funky and the staff are a great help!

Location was fine for us as we were all 22 but some may take transport and theres plenty to do in the city!

Would definitely stay here again!

Room Tip: Eat at Il Rinconcito, it's a block down next to a cleaners. The food is amazing and also if you...

Didn't enjoy staying here at all, the dorm i was in was treated like a hall way as the door didn't lock and everyone had to go through our room in order to get to the only available bathroom.
It was very noisy at night so i didn't get much sleep at all.
Not a bad location, quite close to many points of interest

Before writing my review I'd like to reply to a comment I saw here.

1ºTaking your shoes off makes the hostel be clean, specially during winter. Shoes are placed in the entrance, in some shelves, organised, not in the middle or something.

2º The bathroom is not inside any room, is near reception and is big enough so 3 people can shower at the same time (and another one for another 3 women)

3º They charged the amount in my card when I arrived.

Now my review, objective:

Amazing staff, very good location, close to white house, bus stop and metro. Also Liquour store and supermarket near. We loved the free pancakes every morning. we could not enjoy the free barbaque on Sunday but Im sure it should be excellent too. The BBQ is in a nice wooden terrace on the top. No views but nice to chill and drink something (drink allowed until 10pm)

Feel as home in a very familiar hostel, with nice common areas with TV or computer, good WiFi, nice bathroom and confortable beds. Definately the place to stay if you are in Washington, best value for your money. Thank you all!! Sorry for the frame :P

This is a very comfortable hostel - I commented to the staff that it felt like I was coming home each night after a day of sightseeing. It just doesn't feel like a hostel, and that's one of the best compliments I can give it.

Duo Housing is a minimalistic hostel. There are not a lot of amenities, but it gets the job done. For example, no blow-dryers, and if you want to do laundry, you're going to need to travel to the very expensive but nearby laundromat to do a load. The hostel has a common area on the first floor for TV watching, and two decks - one downstairs for smokers, and one on the roof for socializing and hostel events. However, space is definitely limited - it feels intimate, but it can also feel crowded.

Location is not great - it's a good walk to The Mall, but just close enough that you don't want to take transportation. Neighbourhood is on the shady side - you can definitely notice the level of poverty. The hostel is just about right beside a liquor store; perhaps a positive for some, but I definitely noticed some unwelcome visitors on account of the proximity.

Staff are friendly, they pretty much treat you like family. Hostel-led events are almost non-existent, but they do offer free food. There is a free pancake breakfast each morning, though plain pancakes do get tiresome quickly - I suggest bringing some of your own fresh fruit or other toppings to spice things up. The hostel also offers a free bbq dinner each Sunday, and there will be tons of free food and alcohol, so try to include a Sunday night with your stay.

The hostel is a great value at just over $20, you really can't beat the price. However, the rooms do leave a little to be desired. Outlets are not very convenient, but the wifi is good. The pillow I received had almost no stuffing - I had to have it exchanged, so don't expect a lot from the beddings.

Overall, I can't speak for other Washington, DC options, but Duo Housing is a good choice for those on a tight budget. It won't do much more than provide the absolute basics, but it works.

Room Tip: Buy some fresh fruit to spice up the free pancakes offered each morning.
