“Feels Like Home”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2013

This is a very comfortable hostel - I commented to the staff that it felt like I was coming home each night after a day of sightseeing. It just doesn't feel like a hostel, and that's one of the best compliments I can give it.

Duo Housing is a minimalistic hostel. There are not a lot of amenities, but it gets the job done. For example, no blow-dryers, and if you want to do laundry, you're going to need to travel to the very expensive but nearby laundromat to do a load. The hostel has a common area on the first floor for TV watching, and two decks - one downstairs for smokers, and one on the roof for socializing and hostel events. However, space is definitely limited - it feels intimate, but it can also feel crowded.

Location is not great - it's a good walk to The Mall, but just close enough that you don't want to take transportation. Neighbourhood is on the shady side - you can definitely notice the level of poverty. The hostel is just about right beside a liquor store; perhaps a positive for some, but I definitely noticed some unwelcome visitors on account of the proximity.

Staff are friendly, they pretty much treat you like family. Hostel-led events are almost non-existent, but they do offer free food. There is a free pancake breakfast each morning, though plain pancakes do get tiresome quickly - I suggest bringing some of your own fresh fruit or other toppings to spice things up. The hostel also offers a free bbq dinner each Sunday, and there will be tons of free food and alcohol, so try to include a Sunday night with your stay.

The hostel is a great value at just over $20, you really can't beat the price. However, the rooms do leave a little to be desired. Outlets are not very convenient, but the wifi is good. The pillow I received had almost no stuffing - I had to have it exchanged, so don't expect a lot from the beddings.

Overall, I can't speak for other Washington, DC options, but Duo Housing is a good choice for those on a tight budget. It won't do much more than provide the absolute basics, but it works.

Room Tip: Buy some fresh fruit to spice up the free pancakes offered each morning.

SO MANY BAD POINTS!! Where to start? On arrival, we were urged to take our shoes off in the reception area where all shoes were kept, it stunk!! we enter the hostel and there is a DOG! My friend is allergic to dogs, there was no mention of a dog staying on any site before booking! We stayed in the basement room, no natural light, poor ventilation. Beds were extremely uncomfortable, mattress very hard, covers were stained (urine, vomit, blood!!!) and pillow was too thin to make a difference. Ceilings were covered in rot and damp, top bunks far too close to ceiling. My other friend had an asthma attack in the night, and all 3 of us woke up feeling short of breath, and very ill. I have no doubts that this was due to the room.

-towels were donated hole ridden old towels.
-linen was dirty and stained
-bathroom was dirty
-no privacy, one toilet, glass doors on showers.
-not enough lockers to accommodate everyone in the room
-not proper lockers -old filing cabinet drawer used
-staff seemed more interesting in gossiping and flirting than they did cleaning.
-roof top terrace is run down, chairs are broken.
-kitchen too small to keep your own food, or cook in there.
-no juice allowed in the fridge.
-whole place is run down!!!!

Anyone who says this place is clean, has a very low standard of cleanliness!! Definitely NOT for people who like comfort, cleanliness or security. Much better places in DC, which we then stayed at and were finally happy again. I would NOT return to this place, not even for one night!

Stayed 2 nights, really friendly and helpful staff. Pancakes and coffee just awesome. Bathrooms are great and clean. Only one downside, 12man dorms can be a nightmare, especially when 1 person comes in drunk at 2am and 4am and wakes everyone up. Thick skin needed. All-in-all a great place to stay, worth every dollar.

location is very good. As for the condition, the bathrooms are very clean. They have no shoes policy for inside which helps with the floor but it could be better. Sunday barbecue offers really nice food.

Just as it is with hotels, hostels have many different options. If you're not used to it or just somehow afraid of staying in a hostel or anything, this is a great place to start. It is clean, well organized, has a good location... Pretty much everything you could expect from a hostel. Just think about a regular hostel with some good upgrades. The problem? Well, hostels are supposed to be very low-cost options and this one is not that much cheap.

I stayed for 1 night. I really enjoyed my stay. Receptionists were nice, beds were large, and bathrooms were clean. They also provided free pancakes as breakfast. It was in walking distance of a subway station, so transportation was convenient.

This place has very nice rooms, with big lockers, easy to sleep no noise and clean.
It has a very good location walking distance to the national mall.
But the place is boring, there is no platform for socializing with new people there, so it barely happens.
The place is run in a very 'strict' manner taking the fun out of it. No activites planned, the building itself is built in a manner which is hard to move around.
The owner is a hypocrite who does not allow for shoes beyond the front door, but comes with shoes on himself, and worse yet with his dirty dog that drools all over the place. (The bathrooms and rooms are very clean nonetheless. The shoe policy is stupid though)

Bottom line: Need a good clean place, in a good location for a reasonable price ? Found your place.
Want a place for a bit more than that - such as fun, socializing and good 'vibe' ? Search someplace else.
