“Yearning for authentic West Coast Korean”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2013

I enjoyed the ambiance at the 4th st Mandu.
The wait staff was sweet and helpful.
The food was OK. I wanted to eat there because it has been quite a while since I have had Korean food.
The seasoning was wimpy, where was the pepper so important to Korean dishes? I do understand that they are cooking for the local palette but it made the food boring.
I shared an appetizer, ordered the bulgoki entree and had a great glass of chardonnay for 40 bucks tip included.

“Great food, great atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2012

Mandu is a great deal for the money. Delicious food (kimchi, bulgogi, chap-chae....) and fun drinks at very reasonable prices. I've never had to wait long for a table and the service is always friendly. Highly recommend.

“A DC Favorite”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2012 via mobile

I've been here several times, both for dinner and happy hour, but the most recent visit was when a family member visited DC and we went to dinner here with some friends. It's a great neighborhood spot and retains a good neighborhood vibe. As usual, the food was delicious; it's pretty authentic Korean fare in a nice, but not fancy, atmosphere. The menu appeals to a wide range of tastes, so long as people are willing to experiment with a different cuisine. The soba noodle salad is always good, the bibim bop never disappoints, and the dumplings are great. I've ordered several items off the menu, and I have never been disappointed! The service is always nice, but can be on the slow side; however, I appreciate the restaurant's willingness to switch out proteins and things to satisfy guests. Also, one of the best parts of the meal is all of the little snacks they serve first (kimchi and other things); all are yummy. Highly recommend for a casual, inexpensive dinner on a visit to Washington. Great happy hour, too!

“Flavors too Americanized? Service, food = Poor value; Lots of babies.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2012

Anticipating "authentic" Korean, we patiently sat through some rather indifferent service in a small room with too many unhappy babies. The appetizers, seafood and mixed jeons, were good. But, sadly, the other dishes were ... strange. The soba salad with udon noodles was an average green salad with a few sticky cellophane noodles on the top. The bibim bap was so sweet that we could not eat it. The chap chae was uninteresting, salty, gloppy. Well, the NAMES of the dishes were Korean. Maybe it is all aimed at the babies and toddlers. Such a disappointment on a rainy cool night.

“Can you say Dolsot Bibimbap?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2012

There is only one restaurant in DC where I order the same thing every time . . . it's the dolsot bibimbop at Mandu. Love that "bowl of leftovers" which is just what it means. What it is, is a hot stone bowl filled with crispy rice that keeps cooking beneath a mini-mountain of beef, veggies and spices. Served with a Korean side dish that includes kim chee, picked cukes, scrooms and more . . . recently price went from $12 to 14 . . . but that's still the best bet on 19th street!
