“Best of the memorials”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2014

I couldn't get over the size of this memorial. Definately go after dark as the lighting is half of the appeal. I could have spent hours here looking at the water features or sitting on the benches on the water. This is a must see.

“A fantastic tribute to FDR”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2014

This monument might have took longer and cost more than intended to build, but you can't argue with the results. It consists of four joined outdoor areas, and is nicely woven together with granite walls and water features. It's steps away from the Tidal Basin and its famous cherry trees. Unusual for a presidential memorial or monument, it has a statue of Eleanor Roosevelt honoring her work with the United Nations.
Fans of FDR will notice two jarring details (both courtesy of the Clintons): they took away his ever-present cigarette, and put him back in his wheelchair. I am certainly sympathetic to the disabled, but history is not always so sensitive - FDR made sure that the American public didn't see him in his wheelchair. It doesn't match with modern day (and hard-won) disability awareness, but it's how FDR wished to portray himself.
This monument is very well done, and is a must-see if you're in DC.

“Go when it's not winter!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2014

I only rate it very good because the water fountains were turned off and workers were still clearing ice from Roosevelt and his dog statue when we visited. But I could imagine the memorial to be a wonderful place to reflect the life and times of this man, with the waterfalls bubbling in the background, excerpts of his words etched in stone on the walls, the steps, the ground you walked on. The trees around you providing shade, muffling the noise of the military helicopter hovering overhead (reminding you that you are in the capital of America). You can touch the statues, run around (good for children) and visit the bookstore nearby. This memorial would get full ratings when it is spring time and the fountains are on. Washington knows how to do memorials!

“Goes on and on...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2014

A large exhibit that is kind of all over the place. He was president for an extra long time so through a pivotal time. It's only a must see because it was along the walk from The Jefferson Memorial to the Lincoln Memorial.
