Owner description: The Capitol is among the most architecturally impressive and symbolically important buildings in the world. The Senate and the House of Representatives have met here for more than two centuries. Begun in 1793, the Capitol has been built, burnt, rebuilt, extended, and restored; today, it stands as a monument not only to its builders but also to the American people and their government.

“A great tour with headsets.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

We visited the Capitol after the White House tour. What a difference! We had headsets to actually hear our guide, who was very knowledgeable and told many interesting and humorous stories about what we were seeing. She gave us a true sense of the historical significance of this amazing building.

“Skip. the. tour.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

First time to DC; not sure if you can get a better tour through your representative, but skip the general tour. (While, of course, the U.S. Capitol itself is very impressive.) The majority of time is spent checking in, getting a headset (that doesn't work in my case), watching a theatre style movie on the Congress. Only then do you get a quick view just beyond the lobby: of the "crypt", dome and statuary hall. The rooms and photo opps are impressive, but it really is a lot of hassle with no view of the galleries or broader space. The real tour seemed to be of the gifted statues by states, when we were looking to learn more a bit more beyond that. (...and beyond the fact that sound bounces in rooms with round walls and hard surfaces). Tours of other legislatures, parliaments, capitals, etc. worldwide seemed to provide more on the symbolism, history, culture, government, and tradition than our tour had. As we took the tunnel to the Library of Congress we were much more impressed with the exhibitions and information being given to a passing tour, would perhaps have been more keen for that one. That said, it was free.

“Cool cool cool.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

Best if you contact your legislator prior to your trip, at least a couple of months before, to set up a tour (go online to their website and request it), you can also just show up at the Capitol and stand in line to get a tour. Beautiful building, interesting history and lore, and you just might see the Speaker of the House walking through!

“Wow”

Capitol is amazing, capitol steps are amazing, it isn't like you'll have anything else to do there except to take a picture but it is really worth a visit!

“It is on a Hill”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2012

Remember, if you walk to the Capitol, be prepared to hike up hill.
The tour was great! Our guide was very informative and friendly! Skip the cafeteria, few choices, no hot foods were offered after we went through the tour at 9 am...pretty much a waste of money.
