“Great exhibitions”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2012

The permanent collection is good but the exhibitions are great. Across the street from the white house. You need to come here.

“Smaller Museum but just as important”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2011

The Corcoran is not one of the Smithsonian Museums so you do pay to go in, but it is moderately priced and well worth it for art lovers.

“Escape the DC crowds, see wonderful American arts and crafts”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2011

We have made repeated visits over the years to the big museum and monument attractions that DC offers. On a recent visit, at the urging of our hosts, we were directed to the Corcoran and Renwick Galleries near the White House. Besides fewer tourists, both offered surprising and refreshing collections. The Renwick (----------) is a little gem featuring American arts and crafts of remarkable quality and invention. It is part of the Smithsonian family of museums. The Corcoran (----------), which is both museum and art school, also houses a fascinating and varied collection of historic and contemporary art, photography and decorative arts.

The Corcoran charges a fee for entrance but accepts reciprocal admission cards. The Renwick is free.

“Manageable in an afternoon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2011

While the Smithsonian museums in DC are obviously the most famous, and for good reason, sometimes it's nice to bite off a smaller piece of culture. Along with the National Portrait Gallery, I think the Corcoran fits the bill nicely. It's a beautiful quirky old building (check out the bathrooms, even if you don't have to go). The selection of exhibits is pretty broad and some galleries change frequently. John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassat, Edward Hopper. An entire salon gallery from France imported and pieced back together. Bronzes. When I was there, also a Gordon Parks photography exhibit and the 30 Americans exhibit featuring African American artists.

For only $10 ($8 for students) it's a great deal. As it's also a college of art and design, you see students all over and they have their own gallery. It's kinda nice to be around the next generation of artists as well and support an institution such as the Corcoran.

“Quick visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2011

We ducked into this museaum for a quick visit after posing for photos in front ot the White House. It was "foto week" and admission was free - bonus! We enjoyed perusing the variety of art.
