“What a surprise!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2012

I thought this would be a small gallery with maybe a couple of important paintings, but boy was I surprised. The Phillips has a great and extensive collection of artists that go from Renoir to Rothko, so if you like classic or modern art you'll love The Phillips. Highly recommend it, it's worth it!

“Very Nice Collection, Off the Beaten Path_DvB”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2012

This museum is a very quick walk from the DC Metro, and is in close proximity to a number of cafés, restaurants, and taverns to ensure that a full day can be spent in the walking area without boredom. The surrounding area has several embassies and other architectural and historical treasures. For example, one of the first black Senators (Reconstruction era Sen. Bruce) resided in a nearby townhouse. The local area augments a very well planned collection.

Some Highlights:

1) The staff is comprised of many art majors/graduates who can provide valuable information in every room.
2) The flow of the exhibits is smooth and comfortable for navigating and appreciating the art.
3) There is a substantial diversity in the types and themes of the artwork, photographs, etc.
4) It is designed in such a way that you could spend 45 minutes or 5 hours, depending on your time frame or attention span, and still enjoy the experience.
5) It is off the typical route of tourists so the well-spaced interior never seems crowded.

I recommend a visit every trip to DC.

“Intimate Museum with some of the Best Art in DC”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2012

The Phillips is a favorite of DC locals. If you love art, and have little time in DC, this would be the first place you should go. This is the former home of collectors M/M Duncan Phillips, and includes a considerable collection of mostly Impressionists and later painters, but also a smattering of earlier works, even an El Greco. Don't miss the spectacular "Ballerinas at the Bar " (Degas) and DC's most famous painting, "Luncheon of the Boating Party" (Renoir).

“The Boating Party”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2012

Renoir's Boating Party is worth the entire trip to the Phillips. The collection is outstanding and one can see the original museum and the new wing that has been built. Doesn't make a difference whether you spend the day or a few hours. It's worth your time
