First off, I would likely stay here again but only if I had a specific need to be close to Union Station (e.g., Amtrak). The hotel is no more than a 5 minute walk to Union Station, so if you need or want to be in that area, this is a good choice. Since you can also get the Metro red line at Union Station, you can get to many places from this location.
That said, I normally don't prefer the Union Station area. Aside from the touristy (and mostly bad) restaurants inside Union Station (B. Smith's aside -- which is good but also touristy and overpriced), there isn't that much in the way of food or entertainment options in the immediate vicinity. Still, the hotel is a 15 to 20 minute walk into the heart of Chinatown/Gallery Place/Verizon Center, so all is not lost.
As for the hotel itself, it is fairly small. It's not as "funky" as some of the other Kimpton hotels; the rooms are fairly conventional. The lobby is very small and there isn't a bar area to hang out. Adjacent to the hotel is Bistro Bis, a French bistro with decent reviews (but I didn't try it).
Rooms were clean, though somewhat on the small side. Bed was comfortable. Television had so-so reception. No bath -- only a shower stall. Rather than small bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, the hotel uses refillable containers mounted in the shower stall. I didn't like this; seems cheap and one of them had not been refilled.
It was reasonably quiet in the room, though the hallways are annoying loud due to vent units blowing air. The ice machine also made a great deal of noise.
My particular room had a view of a brick wall and windows of other rooms that were maybe 20 feet away. Don't stay here if you want a view or great natural lighting.
Free WiFi (for Kimpton members) was available in the room and lobby. It worked fine.
Overall, my stay here was decent, but there are better choices, including better Kimptons in both DC and Alexandria. The George is decent but neither the hotel nor location really stand out in relation to some of the others. I've tried six or seven now, and all things considered, I prefer the Monaco and the Palomar.
